WINFIELD — The streets of Winfield look a little different after the installation of 18 new stop signs throughout city streets to better control speeding within the city limits.
“Be ready to STOP!” the City of Winfield Facebook page announced in the middle of February. “Over the next week, the Public Works department will install many new STOP signs throughout the city. The City Council approved these STOP signs to be installed to help slow down the speed of traffic on our city streets. The goal is to make our neighborhoods a safer place for everyone!”
According to Winfield Mayor Willie Bender, the stop sign instillation came as a result of the public requesting the city take more measures to control the speed of vehicles on the streets of Winfield.
“Many of the new stop signs are attributed directly to locations that we heard concerns,” Bender said. “We take the safety, especially for our kids, of our city seriously. We spent time looking at our existing signage on streets and paid close attention to areas that didn't have Stop or Yield signs. In some cases, there were several blocks of intersections without any signage to control traffic. This is one example of our effort to listen to community feedback to improve the quality of life and safety of Winfield.”
The 18 new stop signs include a four-way stop at the intersection of Elm and Walnut streets near the business district. Two new signs now sit at the intersection of Chestnut and Pine Street. Additionally, three signs were installed within a block of Winfield City Park which recently received updated playground equipment.
Five other stop signs are located at intersections along Huntsberry Street. One now sits at both intersections of Bashford and Ash streets and Pearl and Clark Street. Near the edge of town drivers should keep their eyes peeled for two added signs at intersections on Walnut Street at Lincoln and Jefferson streets.
