Sunrise Terrace to host bake sale Saturday

Residents at Sunrise Terrace in Winfield have been busy getting ready for their upcoming Bake Sale this Saturday, Nov. 11. This event is more than just a fund-raiser or marketing tool – it helps fulfill their basic human need to be part of something meaningful. Culture Change (the movement to transform hospital-type centers into more homelike areas) has taught us that meaningful activity helps increase self-esteem, decrease depression, maintain mobility, sharpen minds, and form bonds of friendship.

Grandmas are known for their baking skills and often has been their ‘identity’. While they do not have their own kitchens and stamina may have lessened, many of the Sunrise ladies have enjoyed this opportunity to continue to bake for a cause (special programs and events). They have enjoyed putting their cooking skills and knowledge to use and often reminisce about their favorite recipes, past events, and even cooking disasters. When all work together, no one is overwhelmed, and where one might have a weakness, another can fill in. Camaraderie, teamwork, humor, and love are all extra ingredients in the cookies, candies, rolls, and snacks made in the Sunrise Activity Kitchen.

Residents are excited to have outside vendors coming in on Saturday so they can shop and see what others have to offer. For some, going out to shop is a major ordeal due to mobility issues, so to be able to shop ‘at home’ is a treat! The vendors also draw in many community members, family, and friends for them to socialize with. This year there will be an area set aside in Garden Terrace for people to have a roll and beverage and visit if they wish.

There are roughly 18 vendors and crafters this year who will be set up in the Chapel, Great Room, Therapy Gym, and Garden Terrace. Baked goods will be in the Activity Kitchen. The sale runs from 9:00 to 1:00. Residents invite you to their home to enjoy this event and hope to see you there!
