WAYLAND — Winter weather finally made its debut across Iowa, and WACO Warriors have made the best of cold, snowy, icy days thanks to maintenance crews and personal touches like hot a chocolate bar.
Like many schools across the state, WACO Community School District has seen their fair share of cancelations and delays in the last couple of weeks, including a two-hour late start last Friday, Jan. 19, which was already scheduled as a snow makeup day for earlier cancelations.
With the cold weather and the added day for snow makeup, it was only fitting to welcome students into the WACO High School with hot chocolate complete with marshmallows.
WACO High School recognized the hard work of the district’s maintenance and custodian staff including Groundskeeper Chayse Roth and custodians Eric Merida and Ameur El Fenniche as they prepared to head back to school following snowstorm after snowstorm.
The crew worked together to clear large drifts of snow from the parking lot and entrances of the school as they prepared to welcome students back from many days off thanks to snow.
Even after clearing all that snow and warming students with hot chocolate, WACO still had to issue a two-hour delay for Monday, Jan. 23 due to icy roads.
As they continue to look at more potential winter weather heading their way, the district announced school bus routes will remain on hard-surface only bus routes when traveling normal routes becomes unsafe.
Additional planned snow makeup days for the district currently include Feb. 2 and April 12.
