MT. VERNON — Winfield-Mt. Union and WACO high school students will attend the Iowa High School Speech Association’s Individual Events State Speech Contest Saturday, March 9 thanks to their outstanding performances at district contest last Saturday.
Bright and early Saturday morning, Feb. 24, hopeful speech students headed out to their respective district speech locations to show off their hard work in a variety of individual events from Expository Speaking to Improvisational Acting, to Poetry, to Radio News Broadcasting.
WACO and WMU will each send four exceptional performers to the state competition after they each received Division I ratings from a single judge at districts.
From WACO the following students will perform at the state competition:
Brian Neal — Improvisational Acting
Levi Bachman — Improvisational Acting and Prose
John Stauffer — Improvisational Acting
Jaklyn Cook — Spontaneous Speaking and Original Oratory
From WMU the following students will perform:
Avalin Grieser — Prose and Literary Program
Beatrice Anderson — Prose
Ella Kann — After Dinner Speaking
Monte Izatt — Improvisational Acting
As they move forward, these students hope to achieve Division I ratings at the state contest from not only one judge, but three. Additionally, to move onto the All-State level of competition performers will need to stand out from the crowd enough to receive a recommendation from one of their judges.
