WINFIELD — As Winfield-Mt. Union Community School District’s music program continues to grow, director Lindsey Pogmore continues to add more ways to stretch her students. This past month she did that by celebrating Music In Our Schools Month.
March was officially designated as Music In Our Schools Month nearly 40 years ago by the National Association for Music Education, but this is the first year WMU music students have celebrated through multi-grade activities such as reading buddies with music themed books, an instrument petting zoo, singing games, and instrument demonstrations.
According to Pogmore, the junior high and high school band students led these activities and spent time getting WMU’s elementary students excited about music.
“We had a good response from elementary students and staff,” Pogmore said.
Sophomore Saxophone player Beatrice Anderson says she enjoyed getting to share her passion for music with the younger students.
“I liked getting to talk to the little kids and tell them about what band is and what music is and telling them that they should join band when they’re older,” Anderson said.
Anderson especially liked when she led students through checking out her saxophone in the instrument petting zoo.
“We would have all the instruments set up, like bigger ones they could touch without breaking, so the kids could walk through and try out a guitar or play all the different percussion instruments or strings,” Pogmore said. “Or a saxophone player might blow a note on their instrument and the little kids could press the keys.”
Pogmore hopes to continue celebrating Music In Our Schools Month in years to come, and anticipates the activities growing as they continue
