WINFIELD — Finding ways to stay in shape after high school can be difficult for a lot of people, but it doesn’t have to be any longer for students graduating from Winfield-Mt. Union.
Physical Education Teacher Aimee Iverson recently unveiled the “Wolf Fit” project as the newest P.E. class high school students will have the opportunity to try next year.
During Wolf Fit classes, students will gain the skills and knowledge needed to maintain fitness levels post-high school, according to the course handbook. Activities will include HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) workouts, circuit training, aerobics, yoga, and other activities more common outside of the typical P.E. setting.
Students will have the opportunity to get involved with a variety of activities to encourage lifetime fitness and wellness. These will include options that would be available to them outside of the typical gym class setting such as Golf, Disc Golf, cornhole, pickleball, etc. to better set them up for adult success and encourage lifetime fitness and wellness.
This new offering will help students understand that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction. Students also will gain the skills necessary to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle after graduation.
“The whole reason I wanted to do something like this,” Iverson said, “ is because a lot of students don't thrive in the competitive traditional atmosphere and not everyone wants to be in the weight room, as that can be intimidating.”
Iverson is a graduate of Iowa Wesleyan University and has been teaching at W-MU since 2022. She has brought many new ideas to the district, including elementary students getting their “Locomotor License” by mastering certain skills, Drum Fit, and Tchoukball.
