2010
July 1, 2010, the home of Jeff and Sheila (Miles) Evans and their two children, Dylon (14) and Bryanna (12) on Gabriel Ave., rural Wayland, was destroyed by fire. The Evans family moved into the home about four years ago. It was the home of Sheila’s grandparents, Dillon and Mable Hertig.
Dick Schlatter was the Grand Marshal for the 2010 Wayland Independence Day Celebration. Schlatter was a member of the Wayland Fire and Rescue for 44 years, Captain for five years, Fire Chief for 19 years, and the 2001 Firefighter of the Year. He served on the Wayland City Council for 12 years and served as Mayor for one year. He and his wife, Mary, have been married for 53 years.
Mike and Carol Shumaker will celebrate their silver wedding anniversary on July 27, 1985.

Herb Rich, formerly of Crawfordsville, celebrated his 80th birthday July 9.
The Iowa interstate speed limits went up to 70 miles per hour this week.
James Leichty, age 70, of rural Wayland, died July 5, at the Washington Care Center.

Douglas G. Schermer has been welcomed as the new superintendent at WACO Schools.
Chad J. Doak has been named as a Henry County Deputy Sheriff.

Wayland Boy Scouts returned home from a trip to Canadian Boundary Waters.
Pamela Sue Kaufman and Robert Preston O’Brian were married June 2.
Toby Brummer and Richard Johnson are planning an October 12 wedding.
1985
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Bender are the parents of twins. Justin James and Lindsey Marie were born June 26.
Mike and Sharon Thurman are the parents of Melissa Louise, born June 9, 1985.
Ralph Stuart was presented with the lifetime membership award from Lions International for his 25 years of perfect attendance at the Wayland Lions Club.
LaVerne and Elizabeth Graber were honored for their 40th wedding anniversary.,

Mitchell J. Schwerin, age 18, driver, and a passenger received minor injuries when their car struck a utility pole.
Jean Marie Dettmann and Robert Dean Ibbotson were married June 21.
Jean Gerig and David Sickles were married June 15 at her parents home.
1975
Mr. and Mrs. Dean Kauffman purchased the Eva Davison property at public auction for $10,000.
Faye LaDoris Hirschy and Darrell Michael Schultz were married June 21 at Wayland.
Scott D. Kauffman, a member of the graduation class at Palmer College of Chiropractic, received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree at the June 14 commencement.

Charlotte Iseman, 19, was injured when the tractor she was driving up a steep incline upset and came over backward on her. Neighbors were able to get the tractor off her using jacks and tractors. She was taken to Iowa City Hospital.
