The Wayland Fire Department answered a call to Wagler Woodcraft Mfg. on Aug. 12. A spark caused a fire in a container on the outside of the building that collects dust from the equipment. There was no damage to the building.
2010
The Wayland State Bank in Mt. Pleasant was robbed at 1:50 p.m. on Aug. 9. The suspect in the robbery is also suspected in a robbery of a credit union in Ottumwa.

The family of Milan Roth donated a memorial monument in his memory to the WACO School.

Robert L. Smith, age 65, died Aug. 12 at Great River Medical Center in Burlington.

Iner Leif, age 47, was thrown from his car when it left the roadway. He was found in a ditch by Ervin Leichty and was taken to Memorial Hospital.

LaVerne Graber purchased the late Will Allen property at auction from the Wayland Retirement Home Association for $110.

Ralph Christner’s car was a total loss from fire as the motor burst into flames while he was driving home from town.
Gale Tschantz received a broken arm while playing softball when he and George Unkrich collided.
1940
Scam artist bilked Brighton, Wayland, and Winfield businesses out of funds to bring the Howe Bros. Circus to their towns. A messenger brought back ill boding tidings that the circus failed to arrive in Brighton. It will long be remembered how the Howe Bros. Circus did not come to town!

A daughter, Virginia, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Bower.
A cow that Joel Zingg was leading thrust her head against Mr. Zingg, knocking him over a woodpile. He was cut about the face and forehead.

J.A. Kauffman and Jake Wenger sold the John F. Hauenstein farm of 80 acres near Olds for $300 per acre.

R.A. Ilse, prominent Henry County farmer, died from injuries received when he jumped from a windmill at his home south of Trenton.
