Wayland’s Volunteer Fire Department has received a $2500 Community Grant from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation. The grant will assist in the purchase of a new firetruck.

Lori Ann Messer and Samuel Yancey have announced their engagement.

Warren Graber, age 84, died Aug. 23 at the Henry County Health Center.

The doors closed for the last time at Schlatter Garage on July 1. Dick has joined Brad’s Implement and Auto Parts on a part-time basis.

Earl and Frieda Bachman will observe their 62nd wedding anniversary on Sept. 2.

1995

Kerry Alvine, age 12, took first place in the Bill Riley Talent Show at the Iowa State Fair. This was her third State Championship title.

New faces on the WACO staff are Craig Ness, Douglas Schermer, Robin Wilkerson, John Satre, and Andrea McBeth.

Bill and Mary Wintermeyer will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

Doyle and Barb Grieser are the parents of Grace Elizabeth, born Aug. 25.

Bernard and Helen Bates celebrated their Aug. 14, 55th wedding anniversary on Aug. 9 at Jack’s 19th Hole.

Debra Swartzendruber and Clark Roth were married Aug. 2.

Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Anderson are the parents of Taylor Maxwell, born Aug. 2.

David and Shana Boshart are the parents of David Anthony, born Aug. 18.

Mr. and Mrs. Tom Clements are the parents of Elizabeth Margaret, born Aug. 21.

1980

Verda Hamilton, age 69, and her daughter, Rose Kellar, age 38, were shot and killed as they sat in Mrs. Hamilton’s car in front of Mrs. Kellar’s residence in Mt. Pleasant. Richard Travis Kellar, age 40, was charged with their murders and the attempted murder of Robert Hansen, age 54, a New London lawyer, and his wife. Kellar was arrested by Sheriff’s posse in New London.

Fire destroyed a storage shed on the Dillon Boshart farm on Aug. 26.

Linda Beachy and Dale Marner were married July 19.

James E. Henss received a diploma from Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Freyenberger were honored at a reception at the Gerald Freyenberger home.

Mr. and Mrs. Michael Mohr are the parents of Michael John, born Aug. 17.
