Wayland Fire and Rescue was called to Dakota Avenue for a car rollover and an EMS call on Gabriel Avenue, both on February 17, according to Wayland Fire Chief, Mat Leichty.
This past fall, WACO High School instituted a new weight training class during the school day. It started out being just a time for students to get in the weight room and lift, but has evolved into a class that incorporates a phenomena that has been spreading across the nation, Crossfit.
The WACO Warriors were defeated by the Pekin Panthers in Packwood, 62 – 34 on Thursday, February 14. Tyler Ayers and Aaron Barnhart led the Warriors with 10 and six points respectively.

The Festival of Lights Committee expressed its appreciation to all who helped make the 1997 Festival a success. At the February 16 meeting, the committee agreed to make the following donations: $1,000 to Wayland Lions Club. $800 to the town of Wayland, $100 to Community Action, $100 to the Wayland Museum.
No. 5 ranked WACO boys outscored Fairfield Marharishi 18 – 2 in the second quarter and coasted to victory in a Class 1A district first-round game in Fairfield, 73 – 44
50 years ago – February 22, 1973
Wayland Study Club met Monday evening, with Miss Frieda Reininger. Roll call was answered with a pet peeve. Mrs. Laurence Henss presented the program. “Miracle of Your Memory”. A social evening was then spent with refreshments served by the hostess in keeping with the season.
Mr. and Mrs. Donald Rich spent Saturday and Sunday in the home of their daughter Mr. and Mrs Robert Wells and Robbie at Jewell. Monday, they attended the Mid-Winter rural carriers meeting at the Holiday Inn, Ames.
The following WACO students will be participating in the Iowa High School Speech Association speech contest February 23 and 24 in Mediapolis. Susie Swartzendruber, Beth Gerig, Kathy Stone, Barbara Reschly and Judy Hulme.
100 years ago – February 22, 1923
Miss Lena Undernehr was very pleasantly surprised last Thursday evening when a number of her friends and neighbors came in to celebrate her birthday. She was even more pleasantly surprised when they presented her with a handsome woolen quilt, which they had pieced for her as a token of regard.
Elmer Meyer of Wayland has earned a regular place on the basketball team at Parsons College, Fairfield.. Coach Glenn Devine of the Parsons quintet has procured a special headgear for Elmer which permits him to wear his spectacles when playing, thus doing away with the handicap which his poor eyesight had been to him in the past.
