COLUMBUS JUNCTION — It was loud. It was spectacular. It was opening night.
It was four-10ths of a mile racing from a field of 106 drivers Friday night as the 2021 racing season got underway at the CJ Speedway in Columbus Junction.
The headliner was the 20-lap Mincer Ford IMCA Stock Car feature won by Jason See, who advanced from his outside second row start to take the lead for good from Scott Jordan as the third lap was scored. Tad Payne advanced from a fourth row start to finish just ahead of Derrick Agee at the checkered flag.
The Stewart & Son Fuel IMCA Modified feature belonged to Derrick Stewart, who was never seriously challenged.
The Huston Brothers Trucking IMCA Sportmods saw Shane Paris establish himself early among the 26 drivers entered. Paris held off Carthage, Ill., driver Austin Becerra.
The Midwest Towing IMCA Sport Compacts saw CJ Speedway defending track champion Cody Staley score a feature win on his favorite track. Staley will be doing double duty in 2021, as he also will be campaigning a hobby stock. Staley took the sport compact checkers after a long duel with Jake Benischek. The two swapped the lead several times before Staley was able to secure the win.
New to the CJ Speedway in 2021 is the addition of the CJ Auto Parts-NAPA Store IMCA Hobby Stocks. Randy LaMar defeated 15 other drivers from his start in the sixth position by holding off Jake Benischek.
Friday night racing will continue at the CJ Speedway with hot laps scheduled to take to the track at 7:15 p.m.
