The 2023 Iowa high school baseball state tournament is near its completion.
After three days of win or go home baseball between the four classes, the final stage in now set for two squads in both Class 1A and 3A.
With a full 1A season now nearly complete it comes down to No. 2 Remsen St. Mary’s and No. 5 Lisbon to see who can call themselves the best in the class across the state.
In 3A, all that remains is the number one and two teams in the class. When a champion is crowned it will be No. 1 Western Dubuque or No. 2 North Polk.
Class 1A championship games will be played on Friday at noon at Merchants park in Carroll.
Class 3A will take place at 5 p.m. on Friday at Duane Banks Baseball Stadium in Iowa City.
Remsen St. Mary’s punched its ticket to the title game with a narrow 1-0 victory over Lynnville-Sully.
The Hawks single run in the second inning was enough to sneak past Lynnville-Sully. It’s back-to-back trips to the title game for Remsen St. Mary’s as they fell to New London in 2022.
In Class 3A, North Polk shutout Carlisle 8-0 to get into the final.
The Comets scored two in the second, two in the fourth and four in the fifth on their way to the win.
As for Western Dubuque, the Bobcats had to make a comeback against Wahlert Catholic.
Wahlert led 3-0 after two innings in the semifinal bout, but Western Dubuque scored seven unanswered over the next four innings to end it.
Class 2A and 4A semifinals will take place on Thursday.
In 2A, Underwood takes on Cascade, along with Beckman Catholic vs. West Lyon.
Class 4A will be Johnston vs. Dowling Catholic and Cedar Falls facing Ames.
