New London’s Porter 3rd-leading scorer in eight team field

DES MOINES — Just a few days remain until the Class 1A boys basketball will reach its climax as eight teams from around the state battle for a chance at class supremacy and a state championship.
Eighth-seeded New London is all that remains from the Union coverage area and the Tigers (19-6) have a tough test in front of them in No. 1 seeded Grand View Christian (24-0).
Second-seeded North Linn sports a 24-0 record as well, while No. 3 seeded Gladbrook-Reinbeck sits at 23-3, No. 4 West Harrison 23-1, No. 5 Dunkerton 24-1, No. 6 Remsen St. Mary’s 22-2 and NO. 7 Madrid 22-2 as well.
New London averages 65.4 points a game, while holding opponents to 55.5 points a night. The Tigers 10 point differential ranks last among the eight team field.
North Linn leads in the point differential line defeating teams by an average of 47.3 points. The Lynx average 84.2 points and give up just 37.
Grand View Christian follows in that category with a 33.2 point differential, averaging 80.9 points a game and holding the opposition to 47.8.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck and West Harrison all outscore their opponents by 30 or more as well.
When it comes to scoring, New London has two of the top scorer in the field.
The Tiger’s Blaise Porter ranks third out of the field of eight, averaging 25 points a night.
Only Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s William Kiburis (26.5 PPG) and Dunkerton’s Preston Gillespie (25.8 PPG) average more.
Kade Benjamin follows Porter in sixth, averaging 19.6 a night.
Toryn Severson (20.8 PPG) of Madrid and Josh Sanderson of Grand View Christian (20.7 PPG) separate the pair of Tigers.
The leading rebounding distinction belongs to West Harrison’s Sage Evans. The senior brings in 16.2 rebounds a game. Seven footer, Daniel Tobiloba of Grand View Christian follows with 13.1 rebounds. He also ranks second in blocks at 4.2 a game, behind Madrid’s Jackson Newell at 6.3.
For New London, Benjamin pulls down 8.7 boards and Porter follows at 8.4. Benjamin is the third-best blocker in the field averaging 3.7 a game.
The top three dimers in Class 1A will be competing at state.
Casey Gardner of Dunkerton averages 9.6 assists a game, while Josh Sanderson of Grand View Christian averages 8.3 and William Kiburis of Gladbrook-Reinbeck follows with 8.1.
Porter leads the Tigers with 4.6 assists a game.
In round one, the Tigers will be playing against a player that is inside the top five in all major statistical categories in points, rebounds and assists.
When it comes to shooting, the Thunder edge the Tigers narrowly.
Grand View Christian shoots 50% from the field and 36.4% from three. The Tigers follow at 49.3% from the field and 30.3 % from three.
North Linn leads the field with a 53.4% clip and 39.4% from three.
These numbers will get put to the test at 10:30 a.m., on Monday. New London and Grand View Christian will kick off four-straight Class 1A games, as the field whittles down to four by the end of the night, two by Wednesday night and one after Friday afternoon’s championship.
