1st regular season softball rankings out

DES MOINES - The first regular season rankings by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union for softball were released Thursday.

The new poll saw one Union area team leave the rankings from the preseason release and one team enter, while another remained the same.

In Class 4A, Fairfield maintained its No. 11 ranking despite a loss. The loss was to nonconference foe, Class 3A Albia, which moved up a spot from No. 6 to No. 5. Fellow Southeast Conference member Washington, which was slotted at No. 12 in the 4A preseason poll, fell from the top 15 after dropping its first three games. The Demons recovered to sweep Mt. Pleasant Thursday.

Winfield-Mt. Union entered the Class 1A rankings at No. 13 after playing Class 3A No. 2 Louisa-Muscatine to a single run loss. Both are members of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division. The South division's West Burlington/Notre Dame dropped a spot from No. 14 to 13.

River Valley Conference members Anamosa (No. 4) and West Liberty (No. 8) were ranked in 3A and Durant was at No. 15 in 2A.

South Iowa Cedar League had Lynnville-Sully at No. 6 in 1A and North Mahaska at No. 14.
