WAYLAND — More competition often produces better results.
Witness Griffin Greiner of Cardinal and his two school records. In that vein, the Southeast Iowa Super Conference combined the North and South divisions into a single track meet Thursday when WACO hosted all 16 league schools’ boys and girls teams.
The increased competition made a difference for Hillcrest Academy’s Aaron Hershberger, who was second in the 400-meter hurdles race yet was the North champion, dropping a second off his time for a new personal best.
“It was nice to chase somebody and still be the winner. I like that there was more competition, which pushed me,” he said. “I had a goal time of a minute flat and ran 59.03.”
Every event was run as a single competition, then division champions determined.
“You want to run against the best,” said Pekin coach Davis Eidahl, whose boys team was fourth. The Pekin girls won the North behind Lauren Dershied, who circled the track nearly 15 times in victorious races (3000 meters, 1500, distance medley, and 1600 relay.)
Highland’s girls tied for third behind Sarah Burton whose long jump distance was best overall.
“Every athlete we had on the track impressed me with how they competed,” Highland coach Angela Stroebel said. “ I saw a lot of heart from all the girls.”
Greiner has been a quadruple winner before, but Thursday’s wins were doubled as the South’s and the conference’s best in the 100 (11.47), 200 (22.78), 400 (50.21) and long jump (22-3). The Comet record in the long jump was 22-2 1/2.
“Our coaches train us really well and I have the mindset that I want to win championships, so I do what I can to work my way toward winning titles,” Greiner said. “Coaches have a program that builds stamina and that gets me where I need to be.”
His 40 points contributed to Cardinal’s third place in the South. New London was second as Kade Benjamin returned from injury to win the high jump.
