The 2023 baseball season has come and gone in what feels like the blink of an eye.
Through a summer of action, no teams were better than the Warriors of Van Buren County and the Golden Hawks of Mid-Prairie.
With Van Buren County making the state tournament and Mid-Prairie falling one game short after a loss to the Warriors in the substate final, it seems fitting that both the Warriors and Golden Hawks are represented on the 2023 All-State list released by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association.
Between the two squads, there are five total selections.
Mid-Prairie leads with three, while Van Buren County follows with two.
Both have one first-team selection each.
For Mid-Prairie, junior Karson Grout leads the way as a first-team shortstop selection.
Grout not only helped the Golden Hawks to a 27-7 overall record, he batted a team-best .457. He finished with 34 runs and team-best in hits, 48, and RBIs, 37. He also had four home runs on the season.
Grout finished with a fielding percentage of .878 at short. He also stole a perfect 20-of-20 bases on the year as well.
Van Buren County is led by Jackson Manning as a utility.
The senior played shortstop the majority of the time, while also closing for the Warriors.
Manning earned Player of the Year honors in the SEISC South this season, while helping the Warriors to the Class 2A state tournament.
He finished the season batting .522 with 51 runs, 47 hits and 60 RBIs. All of which were team leading. Manning hit two home runs as well.
On the mound, Manning finished with an ERA of 1.40.
As the Warrior’s closer, Manning gave up eight hits, four runs (four earned) with 26 strikeouts. Opponents hit with an average of just .096 against him.
Representing on second-team are a pair of Golden Hawks.
Senior Collin Miller earns the nod at the pitcher position.
In 11 games played through the season, the senior amassed a 7-0 record to lead the Golden Hawks.
Miller finished with an ERA of 1.68, giving up 41 hits, 15 runs (14 earned) and 74 strikeout against 210 opponents. The opposition batted with an average of .195.
Fellow senior Alex Bean earns a second-team distinction as an outfielder.
Bean batted .375 on the season. He notched 22 runs, 39 hits and 28 RBIs through the 33 games.
In the field, Bean finished with a fielding percentage of .948.
Bean did a good amount of pitching as well. Bean ended with a 6-2 record and a 3.50 ERA. He gave up 28 hits, 24 runs (19 earned) and 40 strikeouts.
Rounding out the all-state lists is junior Van Buren County second-baseman Lucas Fett on third-team.
Fett hit .378 this year on the way to earning the all-state nod. He also tallied 46 runs with 37 hits and 21 RBIs. In the field, Fett finished with a fielding percentage of .994.
On the mound, Fett tallied a 4-1 record with an ERA of 3.26. On the season, he gave up 28 runs (20 earned) on 32 hits with 44 strikeouts.
