To say the returning Southeast Conference cross-country field is stacked would be a massive understatement. In 2022, an astounding number of SEC cross-country stars were juniors or lower, and the girls’ field was completely dominated by underclassmen.
Nine of the Top-10 finishers in the 2022 SEC boys race should return this fall, including conference champion and state qualifier Micah Rees, of Washington, and state qualifier Ben Carthey, of Mt. Pleasant, both of which are heading into their senior years.
On the girls’ side, all 10 of the Top-10 finishers were underclassmen, including the entire Washington roster, which filled the Top-10 in local meets all year.
The new season sets up more battles between Fort Madison’s Avery Rump and Washington’s Iris Dahl, who seemed to be inseparable at the top all season long. Both will enter their sophomore seasons.
Team wise, the Washington girls are massive favorites coming into the fall, while Fort Madison looks to threaten the Demons on the boys’ side, but as prep cross-country fans have seen before, the incoming freshman class could make all the difference one way or another.
