2024 SCC All-Conference softball and baseball
Cardinal girls and boys name four to All-Conference list

If ones things for certain, it’s that the South Central Conference knows how to play some softball and baseball.
Cardinal was one of those top teams to compete this summer. The Comets softball squad reach as high as a No. 4 ranking in the 2A softball rankings. Meanwhile, the Comet boys finished the season third in the SCC.
The Comets are represented well on this year’s SCC All-Conference list, each team carding four All-Conference selections along with three honorable mentions.
The SCC had teams on both the boys and girls’ side make the state tournament this season. Conference champion Chariton punched it’s ticket to state, making a run to the semifinals. In softball, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, who finished sixth in the conference earned a third-place finish at the state tournament.
Kicking things off with softball, Cardinal has three first-team all-conference selections. Nicoa McClure, Emma Becker and Brinlee Ostrander.
McClure is a unanimous 2024 selection, finishing as one of the best pitchers in the conference.
McClure tied for the most wins in the SCC, finishing with an overall record of 22-7. Her 1.85 earned runs average was a conference best. In all she gave up 151 hits, 78 runs (46 earned) with 163 strikeouts.
McClure gave opposing hitters problems, holding them to an batting average of .206. At the plate, she finished with an average of .240, notching 23 hits with 17 RBIs.
As for Becker, she was the Comets top hitter.
Through her senior season, Becker finished with a batting average of .368, the highest for Cardinal.
Becker had team highs in runs and hits, tallying 46 runs and 39 hits. Her runs total was the best in the SCC. She also had 16 RBIs and was walked 17 times.
Ostrander was a stellar catcher for the Comets. Through 34 games, Ostrander finished with a perfect fielding percentage, not committing an error in 249 total chances. She threw out a total of four runners on the season.
At the plate, Ostrander batted .340 carding 27 runs, 34 hits with 16 RBIs.
The Comets lone second-team selection is Cynthia Albert, who was fantastic at bringing runs home.
Albert finished the season batting .316. She finished with 13 runs, 30 hits and 25 RBIs.
Albert was also one of the Comets top fielders, finishing with a perfect percentage. She didn’t commit an error in 177 total chances.
Cardinals trio of honorable mention selections were Ashlynn Patrick, Summer LaRue and Maclain Hickenbottom.
On the boys’ side, Cayden Courtney is the Comets lone first-team pick as a infielder.
Courtney led the Comets with a batting average of .413. He also led the team in runs and hits, finishing with 27 and 38 respectively.
On the hill, Courtney ended with an ERA of 1.84, giving up 21 hits, 19 runs, seven earned, with 39 strikeouts.
The second-team selections for the Comets are Quinn Snyder, Drake Durflinger and Cody Birlson.
Snyder was the Comets leading pitcher this season. He ended with a record of 5-1 and an ERA of 2.12.
On the hill he gave up 35 hits, 15 runs (11 earned) with 29 strikeouts.
Durflinger batted .333 for the Comets in 2024. He tallied 18 runs, 27 hits and 17 RBIs.
As for Birlson, he ended with a batting average of .316. He finished with 25 hits and a team high 19 RBIs.
Cardinal’s three honorable mentions were Gavin Ware, Brody Phillips and Kazin Miller.
