With the seventh game of the football season having been played, the Iowa High School Athletic Association has released its second version of the Ratings Percentage Index.
This is the second year of the RPI to determine playoff qualifiers among teams that do not win their district title.
Teams will receive RPI numbers ranging between .0000 and 1.000 (higher is better) through three criteria weighted at different percentages. Those are a team's winning percentage, which counts for 37.5 percent, a team's opponents' composite winning percentage, which counts for 37.5 percent, and a team's opponents' opponents' composite winning percentage, which counts for 25 percent. So, RPI = (.375 x WP) + (.375 x OWP) + (.250 x OOWP). Margin of victory or loss does not play in to the RPI.
There are seven unbeatens in Class 1A and Sigourney-Keota has the lowest RPI of the seven, sitting at No. 14. A loss in either of its two final games (No. 24 Wapello Friday and No. 18 Mediapolis in final week) could send the Cobras sliding out of playoff contention.
Class 3A has Solon atop the RPI while Washington is No. 15 and Mt. Pleasant No. 17. Washington opponenets have a 34-29 record while Mt. Pleasant's are 31-32. Washington's opponents' opponents' records total 303-264 while MP's are at 290-277. The two teams meet in the final week at Washington. Keokuk has an RPI of 20.
In Class A, Cardinal is at No. 27, Highland 29 and Pekin 37. Pekin has the highest RPI of any team with just two wins. BGM is at No. 6 while Belle Plaine is 15 and Durant 17.
Mid-Prairie went into Friday's game with Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont side by side in RPI ranking at 36 and 35, but the Golden Hawks' 62-7 win upped them to 29. District leader Willimsburg is at 22.
In 8-man football, District 4 has a plethora of good teams that are knocking each other down or building each other's RPI. Iowa Valley has the highest RPI at No. 9, but Montezuma is 11, HLV is 14 and New London 19 and all have 5-2 records. Lone Tree is 29, English Valleys 30 and WACO is 31. Winfield-Mt. Union is at 44, the highest RPI of any team with just one win.
