8-Player District 6 All District Team announced
Winfield-Mt. Union leads with nine selections, WACO follows with eight

It’s been quite the season for teams in Southeast Iowa’s Class 8-Player District 6.
District play is now complete and the 8-Player playoffs are now upon us, which means District 6’s top players are now receiving recognition for their outstanding play throughout the 2023 season.
Leading the way, is 2023 district champion Winfield-Mt. Union, who holds nine total selections on this year’s list, including coach of the year.
WACO follows with eight and New London has three.
Starting with Winfield-Mt. Union, head coach Scott McCarty is this years district Coach of the Year.
Thus far, he has help the Wolves to the No. 1 rankings in Class 8-Player with 9-0 record and a trip to the second round.
Senior linebacker Cam Buffington is this years Defensive MVP.
On the field, Buffington been a defensive force amassing 83 tackles, 63 solo with 15 tackles for a loss and three sacks.
Offensively, Buffington has 1,130 yards on the ground with 17 touchdowns and another 557 yards receiving with 11 scores.
District 6’s 2023 lineman MVP is WMU’s Cooper Buffington.
Buffington has done it all in the trenches, helping the Wolves put up over 3,000 yards of offense and also has 31.5 tackles on defense with 14 tackles for a loss and a team-high 7.5 sacks.
This year’s first-team quarterback slot is taken by the Wolves’ Jake Edwards.
Edwards has completed 60.4% of his passes so far for 1,175 yards and 21 touchdowns with just two interceptions.
At the wide receiver/tight end spot, Carter Loyd earns the distinction.
Loyd has a second-best 12 receptions for 260 yards and five touchdowns.
Along with Cooper Buffington representing the lineman on first-team is Kael Johnson as an offensive lineman and Abram Edwards as a defensive lineman.
Edwards has 38 total tackles with 31 solo, 12.5 tackles for a loss and 7.5 sacks. He also has 204 receiving yards with three touchdowns.
Cole Milks earns the defensive back honor.
Milks has a second-best 40 total tackles and leads the Wolves with three interceptions.
Milks also has 454 yards rushing with 13 touchdowns and 139 yards receiving with one score.
Eli Miller rounds out the Wolves on first-team with a utility honor.
Miller has 183 yards on the ground with three touchdowns and posted 24 tackles, seven tackles for a loss and two sacks defensively.
The lone second-team selection for WMU is offensive lineman Grant Anderson.
This year’s Offensive MVP is WACO junior Louden Huisenga.
Huisenga not only leads the Warriors on the ground with 676 yards and 11 touchdowns, but has them in the second round of the playoffs with a 7-1 record.
He also has a second-best 191 yards receiving on 14 catches and five touchdowns.
Defensively, Huisenga currently has 42 total tackles, 32 solo, 10 tackles for a loss, one sack, two fumble recoveries and three interceptions.
On first-team for WACO at wide receiver/tight end is senior Colton Leichty.
Leichty has a team-high 203 yards with three touchdowns on 17 catches.
On the defensive side of the ball, Leichty has 42 total tackles, 32 solo, 15.5 tackles for loss and five sacks.
Offensive lineman and senior Chase Waterhouse earns a first-team distinction.
Waterhouse has help WACO put up over 2,200 yards. Defensively, he has 27.5 tackles, 18 solo, a high of nine tackles for a loss with two sacks. He’s also recovered one fumble and has two interceptions.
Clayton Miller is a 2023 utility pick.
Miller, the Warriors quarterback, has thrown for 743 yards and 16 touchdowns with just one interception, while completing 60.5% of his passes.
On the ground he’s rushed for 278 yards and five scores. Defensively, Miller has 13.5 tackles, 10 solo with four interceptions.
Representing the kicker slot is John McLaughlin.
McLaughlin has 59 kickoffs for 2,490 yards. He’s hit 20 of 29 point after attempts.
At linebacker, Joel Meyer is a first-team pick.
Meyer has 40.5 tackles, 31 solo with four tackles for a loss.
Hunter Hughes is a first-team defensive back.
Hughes first season has been a special one as he leads the Warriors with five interceptions. He’s also got 14 tackles, 12 of which are solo.
Hughes has also caught two touchdown passes on offense.
Rounding out the Warriors of first-team is Reece Oswald at utility.
Oswald has done a little bit of everything for WACO.
He’s thrown for a touchdown and follows with 244 yards on the ground and eight scores as well as 57 yards receiving with one touchdown.
On defense, Oswald has 15.5 tackles, 14 solo and three tackles for a loss.
New London’s lone first-team selection in 2023 is Gavin Menke-Bailey at running back.
Menke-Bailey and the Tiger finished with a 1-7 record this season.
While serving as the Tigers quarterback, he passed for 935 yards and 12 touchdowns, completing 45.3% of his passes.
He also led on the ground with 547 yards and six touchdowns.
Defensively, Menke-Bailey totaled 59.5 tackles, 45 solo and five tackles for a loss.
On second-team for New London is defensive lineman Nicholas Loyd and offensive utility Michael Raines.
