ADEL ? Gabe Vandenberg to Kevin Jennings. Ross Heitmeier to Dalton Conrad. Josh Martsching to Calvin Mathews.
Fairfield has seen its share of successful quarterback-to-receiver duos in 2011, but none prepared them for A-D-M?s Gavin Glenn-to-Lane Hovey.
Glenn threw up 202 yards and four touchdowns to Hovey ? out of the quarterback?s 372 aerial yards and five touchdown passes total ? as A-D-M ended Fairfield?s season with an emphatic 56-21 win in Adel Wednesday.
Fairfield?s season ends with a 5-5 record in Mike Schenck?s first season back as head coach after a one-year hiatus.
A-D-M (10-0), meanwhile, moves into the round of 16 with a match-up against Oskaloosa scheduled Monday. Oskaloosa advances following a 23-22 come-from-behind win over Carlisle Wednesday.
The Tigers won the coin toss and opened the game with an 11-play drive punctuated by a 13-yard touchdown pass from Glenn to Hovey, one of three between the two players in the first half.
?They did a nice job checking off and recognizing what we were going to do on defense and took advantage of it,? Schenck said of A-D-M?s offense.
Fairfield appeared to gain momentum when Corbin Harwood intercepted Glenn on the Tigers? first play of their second drive, but a three-and-out by the Fairfield offense and subsequent 50-yard touchdown pass from Glenn to Jordan Grove put A-D-M up 14-0 with 4:47 remaining in the first quarter.
Fairfield put together its first real drive on its third possession, crossing midfield on a 25-yard pass down the middle from Dillon Fry to Davis Lowenberg, but three plays of minimal yardage forced them to punt for the third time in as many drives.
It wouldn?t be until Fairfield?s fourth drive with 44.1 seconds remaining in the opening quarter when they would break onto the scoreboard. Down 21-0 following a second touchdown catch from Hovey, Fairfield running back Zach Vivier juked, spun and hurdled his way 80 yards on one carry to cut the deficit to 21-7. Vivier ended the season with arguably his best offensive performance, gaining more than 200 yards on the ground.
?I thought he ran extremely hard and showed a lot of guts and determination,? Schenck said.
The third touchdown pass from Glenn to Hovey put the Tigers up three scores before the host school blew the game wide open two drives later. A 25-yard kickoff return from Jordan Grove presented A-D-M with good field position at the Fairfield 33. Three passes from Glenn set the Tigers up in front of the goal line before the senior quarterback called his own number to give his team a 35-7 lead at the half.
In the second half, the Trojans came out of the locker room to post a strong third quarter, playing right with the Tigers and only allowing one touchdown while also scoring on a 42-yard pass to Lowenberg, who totaled four catches for 81 yards.
A-D-M was able to tack on two more touchdowns in the final quarter, including a 39-yard screen pass from Glenn to Hovey and a 56-yard run by Grove.
The Trojans managed to slow the bleeding midway through, however, thanks to two Roan Bachar onside kicks scooped up by Max Johnson. Fry, who went 11 of 27 for 134 yards passing, capitalized on one of the two recoveries by throwing a 13-yard strike to Harwood with 6:24 remaining in the game.
?I think in the second half he found his confidence that he had been missing the past few weeks,? Schenck said of Fry. ?He did a nice job from there leading the offense and can hopefully build on that in the offseason.?
Defensively, Cody Kool posted two sacks in his last game as a Trojan, and juniors Patrick Ives and Jake Mineart had one sack apiece. Harwood had the lone interception.
