The dream of playing college softball will be realized for another Highland softball player, after Cheyann Adamson signed her letter of intent to take her talents to Des Moines after graduation.
The Highland senior officially signed to play at Des Moines Area Community College last week, and hopes that the experience can lead to something even bigger.
?The plan is to play for four years,? Adamson said. ?After (two years at) DMACC, I would look at a bigger university to play for.?
The senior has routinely been near the top of the state in terms of average in her time at Highland, finishing fourth in Class 2A with a .559 average and a .591 on-base percentage in her sophomore season.
In her junior season, Adamson posted a .413 average with a .465 on-base percentage, to go with 22 RBIs and 38 hits, finishing second on the team in all four categories.
?I wouldn?t be here right now if we didn?t think she was going to contribute,? DMACC assistant coach Daron Harris said. ?She?s the type of player who will always give it everything she has. She has experience at third, I?ve seen her play in the outfield and all over the place and everywhere through the order. She?s versatile. We know she will contribute.?
DMACC has finished second in their conference the last three seasons, posting a combined record of 120-31 over that span, as well as being World Series qualifiers for the past two seasons, finishing in third in 2014, and fourth in 2015.
With Adamson coming from a winning program in Highland, Harris thinks she?ll fit right in.
?It means a lot to us,? Harris said. ?She comes from a very respected program. We follow Highland year-in and year-out, and we are happy to get someone from this program. We know Cheyann can play ball, and we know her credentials, but we look for high quality people. We have a high standard and she upholds that.?
With the signing done and over with, Adamson said that the focus is on wrapping up her senior year, and then putting an exclamation point on her softball career at Highland.
?The goal is state,? Adamson said. ?We are going to be a young team, but I think we?ll be OK, because we?ve been playing together for so long. Another conference title would be nice.?
