Over the last week, the sports editors from the Golden Triangle have been highlighting athletes from the winter sports season.
The three of us looked at girls basketball players from the smaller and large schools last Wednesday and Thursday; and Friday, the focus was on wrestlers.
Yesterday, boys basketball players from smaller schools were recognized.
Today, we wrap up our spotlight by looking at the All-Golden Triangle boys players from the three large schools.
While only one school made a brief appearance in the state tournament, making the determination on who to select wasn?t easy, as each school has many athletes who deserve extra recognition.
With that said, here are our picks for the 2016-17 All-Golden Triangle team for boys? basketball from the three large schools:
Coach Paul Rundquist led Mt. Pleasant to a 22-3 overall record this season, with one of those three losses coming in the state quarterfinals.
Mt. Pleasant went unbeaten in the SEC for the second straight year and punched their first ticket to Des Moines since 2013 with a 70-40 win over Oskaloosa in their substate game.
Sartorius scored 21.8 points per game this year to lead the Southeast Conference, dished out 108 assists and had 71 steals. He finished the year second in Class 3A in points and steals and scored 19 points in Mt. Pleasant?s state quarterfinal game.
Magnani was the second-leading scorer for the Panthers this season and co-led the team with 108 assists. He also shined defensively, finishing the year with 58 steals, which was ninth overall in Class 3A.
Tom O?Connor scored 8.7 points per game on 70.9 percent from the field and also tallied 133 rebounds and 29 blocks.
The big man from Australia was just the boost the Panthers needed to take that next step toward the state tournament.
A 6-foot-4 sophomore, Crile led Fairfield (9-12) in scoring with 15 points per game. He also led the team in rebounding with 11 per contest.
Always a skilled outside shooter, Crile worked on his inside game this season and became a dominant post-up player. Crile accepted the role as team leader and earned a program award for taking the most charges by any Trojan.
Jaivonn is a junior on the Washington Demons who led his team with 160 points, averaging 10.7 points per game.
He led the team in rebounds, having 95, and had 10 blocks for the year. He was also chosen for the second team Southeast Iowa Conference All-Conference team.
Kohorst battled inside all year for Mt. Pleasant, scoring 6.6 points and pulling down a team-leading 136 rebounds on the year.
He also had great assists and steals numbers as a post, dishing out 62 helpers and finishing with 30 steals.
