All-State softball names released

The Iowa Girls Coaches Association released its 2022 All-State softball list last week and the Union area was well represented, as local teams had eight names on the list.

Three teams saw names make the All-State list. Fairfield capped off its year with two names on the Class 4A first team. Cardinal had three names total on the Class 2A list, and Highland ended up with two names on the Class 1A list.

Fairfield’s Coty Engle and Hannah Simpson were both given Class 4A first-team nods. The two were the anchors of a Trojan team that finished second in the Southeast Conference and was one game away from a state tournament berth.

Engle was the Trojans’ ace once again this season. The junior went 20-4 with a 2.17 ERA and 183 strikeouts to earn her spot. A .356 batting average at the plate with two home runs, three triples, four doubles and 29 RBIs didn’t hurt her case.

Simpson was a menace at the plate, hitting .523 in her senior year.S he finished the year with 10 home runs, 14 doubles, one triple and 50 RBIs.

Cardinal’s Caitlyn Reber landed on the Class 2A second team. She hit .435 this year to lead the Comets. Reber finished with nine doubles, two triples and 16 RBIs.

Sophomore teammate Emma Becker was named to the third team. Becker hit .432 this season with one home run, three triples, 10 doubles and 33 RBIs.

Sophomore ace Nicoa McClure earned an honorable mention nod. She was 17-11 in the circle this year with a 2.21 ERA and 141 strikeouts.

Highland’s Sarah Burton is a Class 2A second-teamer as a sophomore. Burton hit .465 this year, collecting 6 home runs, five triples, six doubles and 19 RBIs along the way.

Huskies teammate Payton Brun made it two Highland sophomores on the list. Brun batted .420 on the season and finished the year with one homer, two triples, 11 doubles and 25 RBIs.

All five classes were given a first team, second team and third team. Due to the number of teams, only Classes 1A and 2A had honorable mention lists.
