A dominant athlete continued to receive honors for his play on the baseball field in 2021.
The Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association released its All-State teams for all four classes Tuesday, and Aidan Rath of Mid-Prairie was a first team selection in Class 2A as a pitcher.
Rath dominance on the mound (63 strikeouts, 22 walks) rivaled his power at the plate. He led 2A in home runs and was tied for third in the state, regardless of class.
Also recognized in Class 2A was Van Buren County first baseman Ryan Wolf, who was placed on the second team.
Wolf was one of two players of the year in the Super Conference South Division with New London outfielder Josh Catala, who also made second team all-state but in Class 1A.
Washington had two Demons picked for third team in Class 3A. Right fielder Reece Mayer was joined by catcher Ethan Zieglowsky.
New London had two other Tigers make the Class 1A teams. On the third team was shortstop Kooper Schulte and pitcher Hecniel Rodriguez. Another area pitcher joined them in Keota’s Colten Clarahan.
Rath tied for fifth in 2A in opponents batting average (minimum 30 innings pitched) at .103. He had a 5-2 record with a WHIP of 1.08 and an earned run average of 1.6. He gave up 17 runs (seven earned) but just 11 hits in 32 innings.
Leading the state in home runs means intentional walks and bad pitches to hit, but Rath clouted 12 long balls, two triples and 12 doubles. His slugging percentage was second at 1.106. Rath continued knocking in runs (40 tied for ninth in 2A), accumulating 94 total bases (fourth). His on base percentage of .598 was 13th and his .494 batting average was 15th.
Mayer, a right fielder, was second in the Southeast Conference in triples, fourth in slugging percentage (. 594) and fifth in the SEC in runs batted in. his batting average was .354. Mayer connected on seven doubles, five triples and two home runs.
At .394, Zieglowsky was eighth in the SEC and the catcher was third in the number of runners thrown out attempting to steal. Zieglowsky did not commit an error all year. He hit seven doubles a triple and a home run.
Wolf was among the best defenders at first base with a single mistake for a fielding average of .993. Wolf batted .461 with three home runs, a triple and 18 doubles. Only two others in 2A had more doubles. Wolf only struck out nine times, reached base over half of his at bats (41 hits, six walks, four reached on errors in 89 trips to the plate). Wolf had a slugging percentage of .753.
Schulte was a utility choice who batted .360 and had a .514 OBP and .560 slugging percentage with three home runs, a triple and four doubles.
Rodriguez’s mound performance produced 54 strikeouts, 24 walks, 1.58 earned run average, 1.58 WHIP in 31 innings pitched. Then there was his plate performance. Rodriguez had a slugging percentage of .724, thanks to seven triples (second in 1A), five home runs (tied for 15th) and a double. He batted .329 on average, reached base at a .462 clip and drove in 37 runs (25th in 1A).
Clarahan’s season highlight was striking out all 21 outs with two walks and one hit in a game this season after beaning the first batter. He led the state in strikeouts through the regular season and finished third (113 K’s in 50 innings pitched) behind Remsen St. Mary’s Blaine Harpeneu, (129 strikeouts in 67.2) who was picked as co-captain of the 1A squad, and Ankeny’s Brody Brecht (126 in 61.1), a first team all-state pitcher in Class 4A. Ankeny and Remsen both lost in the semifinal round of the respective class in the state tournament.
Clarahan (7-1 record) had a WHIP of 0.82 and Catala (4-1) was at 0.84. Catala struck out 31 and walked 11 with a 0.81 earned run average in 34.2 innings pitched. Clarahan walked 27 with an ERA of 1.26.
Opponents batted 0.68 against Clarahan, first in Class 1A (minimum 15 innings pitched) and Catala was at .130 with Rodriguez (6-0) at .124.
At the plate Catala connected on 28 singles, three doubles, three triples and two home runs, batting at a .462 clip, .596 on-base percentage and .654 slugging percentage.
Clarahan had 32 RBIs, a .417 average, .517 OBP, and .583 slugging with one home run, three triples and three doubles. Schulte and Clarahan each had 42 total bases, Catala 51 and Rodriguez 55.
Sigourney’s Cade Molyneux was second team in 1A and Levi Crawford was third team.
