FAIRFIELD — Fairfield’s Southeast Conference boys soccer game against Burlington went right down to the wire on Monday evening, but when the final buzzer sounded, the Trojans came up just short of a league victory.
Fairfield rallied back in the final minutes, but Burlington’s early goals were enough to deliver the Grayhounds a 3-2 victory.
Trojan forward Tate Allen scored the first goal of the game, which was also the first of his career, but Fairfield’s 1-0 lead would be short-lived.
Burlington scored two goals before the end of the first half, one by Braden Schoene and one by Matthew Mercer, and it was 2-1 Grayhounds at the half.
Schoene scored his second goal of the game with 20:11 remaining to put the Grayhounds up 3-1, but Fairfield certainly didn’t waiver. Over the last 20 minutes of the game, the Trojans would flip the field and begin to get some quality chances.
With 11:04 remaining in the game, Allen scored his second goal of the game. Everett Elliason delivered a cross that sneaked past a few feet before finding Allen, who dribbled it around the Burlington keeper and scored.
“It's nice to have Tate,” said Fairfield head coach Felisto Guezimane. “He gave us two good goals tonight, and that's great, because that will build his confidence, and we can build from there.”
Fairfield seemingly had the game tied with 8:48 remaining, as Tate Allen fed Jaxen Allen for a goal, but the official called offsides and the goal was negated.
Fairfield would get a handful of chances throughout the final minutes, but the Trojans could never break through for the third goal.
“In five more minutes, we probably would have tied the game,” said Guezimane. “Even before that, we had some chances, but it just didn't go our way.”
The Trojans fell to 1-2 overall with the loss. Both of those losses have come to SEC leaders Fort Madison and Burlington.
The Trojans will put their 0-2 conference record on the line on Thursday when they travel to Washington (3-1, 1-1).
