Fort Madison — Mt. Pleasant senior Carter Amos had a career game on Monday night in Fort Madison, hitting two home runs in back-to-back at-bats to anchor the Panthers to a 19-11 victory. The Panthers fell 8-5 in Game 2.
Amos’ homers came in the fifth and sixth innings. The Panthers entered the fifth frame leading 6-4. By the time the sixth inning was over, it was an 18-11 ballgame.
Amos had already collected two hits before his first homer, a 3-run bomb tin the fifth. He then topped that with a grand slam in the sixth.
The Panther senior finished 4-for-6, with nine RBIs in the game, almost double that of the 11 he came into the game with.
Zerek Venghaus was 2-for-6 with two RBIs. Payson Coleman knocked in two runs. Starting pitcher Jake Ensminger scored three times and knocked in one run. J.C. Sitar, Payton Walker and Payton Hagans each drove in one.
Ensminger threw 5.1 innings, giving up 11 runs (five earned) to earn the win.
In Game 2, the Panthers gave up a 2-1 lead after a seven-run Fort Madison fifth, and went into the seventh inning trailing 8-2. Mt. Pleasant did make a run at the end of the game.
Ben Newton, Coleman and Hagans all reached base with one out, and all came around to score in the seventh. One of those runs came on a sacrifice fly by Ensminger.
Mt. Pleasant had the lead down to 8-5 with two on and the potential tying run at the plate, but Fort Madison escaped the jam.
In Game 2, Ensminger’s sacrifice fly brought in the only RBI of the game for the Panthers. Venghaus, Sitar, Amos, Newton and Coleman all had hits.
Newton started Game 2 at pitcher for the Panthers.
Mt. Pleasant moved to 11-11 overall and 7-7 in Southeast Conference play after the games. The Panthers close out the SEC schedule with a home game against Fort Madison on Thursday night.
