Anderson strikes out 19, W-MU rolls.

WINFIELD - The Winfield-Mt. Union softball team had playoff mode activated on Tuesday night. The Wolves cruised to a regional tournament victory over Tri-County, taking it 9-1 to to advance to the quarterfinals.

The Wolves scored the first two runs of the game in the second inning. W-MU added three in the third to take a 5-0 advantage.

Tri-County got its only run off W-MU starter Madie Anderson in the top of the fourth inning. That cut the lead to 5-1, but the Trojans wouldn't get another hit from that point on.

W-MU tacked on one run in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to stretch the lead to 9-1, where it would stay.

Madie Anderson was nearly untouchable in the circle. Anderson threw a complete game, giving up just one unearned run on one hit in seven innings. She struck out a ridiculous 19 Tri-County batters in the win.

Liana Sweezer was 0-3 in the win, but she knocked in a team-leading two runs. Anna Anderson went 2-4 with an RBI. Carlee Sloan was 1-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Molly Miller was 1-3 with an RBI, and Emma Haines went 1-3 with a run scored.

The Wolves moved on to the quarterfinal round on Wednesday, July 10, in Winfield. They'll host BGM Brooklyn, who wiped out Iowa Mennonite 12-0 in their game. Other quarterfinalists in the Class 1A Region 5 bracket are Lynnville-Sully, Lone Tree, North Mahaska, New London, Sigourney and Montezuma.
