NEW LONDON - Winfield-Mt. Union ace was dominant once again on Wednesday night. One night after a three-inning no-hitter, W-MU junior Madie Anderson threw another gem, shutting out New London 3-0 on the road.
Anderson had a perfect game going until Ashlyn McSorley broke it up with an infield single in the fifth inning, but the Tigers could never break through and were shut out for the first time this season.
'All three games that we've had this year so far, we've played solid defensive softball,” said W-MU head coach Walt Jackson. 'I just love it. Obviously when you have a Madie Anderson on the mound, it helps a whole lot.”
The Wolves scored in the first inning on an RBI single by Molly Miller. Emma Haines brought home two runs with a two-run double in the top of the second. New London eighth-grader Sophie Mallott shut the Wolves down for the rest of the game, but three runs was more than enough for a Wolves win.
'The thing about softball is, one pitcher can dominate, and that was obvious tonight,” New London head coach Mark Chiri said. 'She was just a better pitcher than we were hitters, we couldn't get our bunts down, and when you don't field very many balls, it's hard to test somebody's defense.”
McSorley had two hits off Anderson, and the Tigers had two runners on in the fifth inning. Before Wednesday night, the Tigers had scored 19 runs combined in their first two games.
Both W-MU and New London now sit at 2-1 on the season. The Wolves will host Pekin tonight (Thursday) and the Tigers will travel south to play Central Lee.
