The tone was set early for the Washington boys? golf team on Tuesday afternoon.
Demon senior Derek Anding posted birdies on the first three holes of the Washington Golf Course on the day, en route to shooting a one-under 34 on the day.
That mark was good for meet medalist honors by three strokes, and helped Washington to its best team score in nearly four years, carding a 151 for the nine-hole tournament.
Fairfield took second at the meet with a 168, while Fort Madison posted a 183.
?This was great for our team to score this well at home,? Washington boys? golf head coach Mark Berhow said. ?We needed to play well and improve, and we challenged the guys beforehand that this was our home course and we know where everything goes. I?m really proud of how they performed and I hope this sends a message to them that they are playing this well consistently.?
After opening up the meet with three straight birdies, Anding notched four pars before bogeying the final two holes to post his 34.
?He was hitting the ball well last night, and came in with some confidence,? Berhow said. ?Golf is such a mental game, where if you start off well, it?s a big plus for you.?
Following Anding was Demon junior Noah Enfield, who shot a 38 on the day, including two birdies.
Sophomore Jacob Van Osdol carded a birdie in his round of 39, while Dalton Myers hit a birdie on his final hole of the day to shoot a 40, rounding out the counting scores.
?Dalton started off with a double-bogey, then responded with a par,? Berhow said. ?That?s the kind of player you want. He finished with a birdie on hole 9, so he persevered all day. Noah and Jacob did the same thing, and that?s the mark of a quality team.?
Mason Rich and Tanner Coleman were the scratch scores for the Washington varsity team, but they weren?t far off, each carding 41s on the day.
In the JV portion of the meet, freshman Ben Bohr led the Demons with a 43, while Lane Burlingame shot a 45 and Mitchell Driscoll carded a 47.
David Hora had a 52, Austin Hazelett carded a 55 and Kyle Fishback recorded a 64 to round out the scoring.
