CHARITON ? The Fairfield wrestling team was shorthanded at the top of the lineup, but the strong-as-ever bottom end more than made up for it.
The Trojans once again started the meet in the heart of the order, jumped out to a 28-0 lead and cruised to a 47-21 victory at Chariton Tuesday night to defend their undefeated dual record.
Jac Pilcher, Jeff Guttry, Seth Davisson, Jake Mineart and Michael Smithburg strung together five straight victories ? four by fall ? to send Fairfield on its way early. Pilcher got the party started with a second-period pin vs. Chariton?s Ben Adams before Guttry followed up with a big 14-3 major decision.
Davisson, Mineart and Smithburg came through with three more pins as Smithburg remains unbeaten in his senior season.
?It was a pretty good outing to resume our season with and it was great to start competing again,? said head coach Bob Glenn after his team concluded a two-week break. ?As a coaching staff we saw some good things out there on the mat, but as always, we also saw some things we need to work on.?
Wyatt Bruce and Brandon Rauscher were absent for the evening, which gave Chariton forfeit victories at 112 and 119. Dakota Simmons returned from missing the Trojans? final outing before winter break to keep his undefeated record intact with a win by fall at 125.
Aaron Gevock (140), Niko Carlson (145) and Michael Hammes (152) finished the evening with more wins to make for the 47-21 final.
Fairfield will continue its busy week coming out of the break with a Southeast Conference dual at Keokuk Thursday night before heading to the Ottumwa tournament Saturday.
