DES MOINES — The Mid-Prairie girls track team has become synonymous with great distance running, but it was the sprinters who shined under the Drake Stadium lights this weekend.
The Golden Hawk sprinters pushed the team to 33 points, placing them fifth in the final Class 2A standings.
“Mid-Prairie has always been known for our distance girls,” said junior Jovi Evans, who raced three times on Saturday alone. “Ever since 2023, our sprints have really improved really quickly.”
The 4X100 team of Jeorgia Evans, Tessa Bombei, Myli Hershberger and Jovi Evans finished third, crossing in 49.15 seconds.
“It feels really good, especially because we broke the school record yesterday,” said Hershberger, referencing a 48.97 second qualifying time. “We’ve been working on that all season, and for it to finally happen at state was pretty cool.”
The Golden Hawks’ 4X800 team of Rachel Hostetler, Brooklyn Stutzman, Brokaw and Kendall Landstrum finished seventh on Saturday, and the third-place 4X100 team gave Mid-Prairie eight total points in the relays.
“I knew our handoffs would be good,” said Brokaw. “And we just trust each other so much.”
Jeorgia Evans, the younger sister of Jovi, showed out every chance she got. She took second in the long jump on Thursday, then took second in the 100-meter dash, in 12.09 seconds, and third in the 200-meter dash, in 25.26 seconds. Jovi finished eighth in the 100, and seventh in the 200.
“I’ve had lots of time sitting in the stands, so it feels good to finally be the one who’s running on the blue oval,” Jeorgia Evans said. “It feels amazing, especially to do it with these people, and have us all together.”
The Mid-Prairie boys didn’t fare too bad themselves, bringing home a ninth-place finish in Class 2A. The Golden Hawks scored 25 points, nine of which came from Emmett Swartzentruber, who took third in the 3200 and sixth in the 1600.
Along with Burke Berry’s third-place shot put throw, the Golden Hawks had a third-place distance medley squad in Kaden Kos, Ryan Henry, Cash Brown and Jayse Yoder. Ryan Henry also finished sixth in the 100-meter dash.
