Another state appearance for Washington girls golf team

The Washington girls golf team is headed back to the state tournament for the third-straight year after qualifying for the meet yesterday.

The girls played at the Gates Park Golf Course in Waterloo where junior Sarah Nacos earned meet medalist honors after shooting a 75.

She helped lead her team to a second-place finish. Washington ended 17 strokes behind Dubuque Wahlert with a 381.

?It was a rough start as the girls were nervous but they were able to gather themselves and turned in a decent round,? said coach Leonard Kull.

Other scorers for Washington came from Megan Vogel and Allison Strabala, who both shot a 99.

?That placed them in the top 10 individuals,? Kull said.

The other top scorer for the Demons was Carly Burlingame who had a 108.

The scratch scores for Washington were Kaityn Mitchell with a 139 and Emily Waite with a 143. ?They both did well and learned a lot about playing under pressure,? Kull said.

As for the team advancing, ?It was mission accomplished,? Kull said.

?That was our idea to score well enough to move on. The regional is a very nerve-wracking experience.

?Some girls want to succeed so badly they don?t play well. Our girls put in a respectable score.?

Next up for the girls is the state tournament at Elmwood Country Club in Marshalltown. ?We will learn more about that course Friday,? Kull said.

?We look forward to the next challenge and we will spend the rest of this week getting ready for it.?
