For the number of people in the the Washington High School gymnasium Saturday, it was deathly quiet.
That was because of the fact that there were weapons that could cause death being used.
Washington hosted an archery tournament that was attended by Albia, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, Madrid, Mt. Vernon, North Linn, North Scott, Cedar Rapids Prairie Point and Solon.
Competition was held in both gyms. In the large gym, there was the bull's-eye competition, where individuals shoot at a circular target with rings that get smaller with the bull's-eye in the middle.
In the auxilliary gym was the 3D competition, where individulas shoot at styrofoam animals. There are circles on the animal for scoring as well.
The Washington High School team placed second out of four schools competing in the bull's-eye tournament. Washington's middle school won and the elementary school was third.
In the 3D competition, the high school was second and the middle school won.
Leading archers for the high school in the bull's-eye tournament were Mitchell Driscoll with a 285 score. A 300 is a perfect score. Samantha Mellinger had a 284 and Griffin Wood a 283.
In the middle school bull's-eye, Allison Rees shot a 275, Brian Frits scored a 272 and Landon Messer a 270.
The elementary bull's-eye leaders were Ryen Pepper with a 258, Isabelle Peterson with a 250 and Gatlin Nash at 249.
Griffin Wood's 283 led the high school team's 3D shooters with Cooper Reed scoring a 278 and Alexis Ide 275.
Curtis Stender had a 282 in the middle school 3D shoot, while Rees had a 277 and Jonathon Moore 250.
The elementary 3D leader was Audrey Smith with a 257, then Pepper's 223 and Peterson's 220.
The Washington archers' next tournament is Saturday at Ottumwa.
