Area athletes finish up events at the Drake Relays

Fairfield?s Michael Fritz placed 14th in the discus on Thursday afternoon with a throw of 143?3?.

Fritz was added to the Drake Relays after a player from Dowling withdrew from the event. There were 24 total throwers in the event.

The top spot went to Northwood-Kensett senior Tom Yezek?s 181?3?, just edging Mt. Vernon?s Tristan Wirfs at 181?. Mid-Prairie?s Levi Duwa fouled on his first two throws, but settled down for a 153?7? toss that was good for 10th place.

Kaysha Dodson finished in fourth place in the high jump for Pekin, clearing 5?4?, finishing behind Megan Durbin of Greene County (5?8?), Rose Gamamou of Iowa City (5?4?) and Sydney Durbin from Odebolt-Arthur and Battle Creek-Ida Grove Schools (5?4?).

The Panthers? Shelbie Williams placed 11th in her shot put event with a throw of 39?4.25?. Erika Hammond of Clinton won the event at 47?10.75?, just edging Kiana Phelps of Kingsley-Pierson/Woodbury Central?s 47?10?. Williams will throw the discus today.

Gwynne Wright placed fifth in the 3000-meter run, completing the race in 10:15.13. The top runner, McKenzie Yanek of Pleasant Valley, ran it in 9:35.98 and Stephanie Jenks of Linn-Mar placed second at 9:49.13. Wright will run in the 800-meter on Friday and the 1500-meter on Saturday.

Fairfield?s distance medley team of Fejon Redd, Alex Crile, Zach Martin and Ross Emmanuel will run today in the second heat of the event.

Pekin?s 4x100-meter relay team of Zoey Wright, Gwynne Wright, Courtney Comstock and Kaylee Linder will also be running today. The group will run in heat 8 of the preliminaries.
