MEDIAPOLIS — Five Union area athletes competed in the 2023 Southeast Iowa All-Star Classic volleyball game on Saturday night at Mediapolis High School.
The annual event celebrates some of the best players in Southeast Iowa, all of which have played their final seasons of high school volleyball.
WACO’s Emma Wagler and Van Buren County’s Ivy Davidson were teammates at the event, playing for the ‘home’ team on the scoreboard. The ‘away’ team consisted of New London’s Sophie Malott, Fairfield’s Maddie Jones and Winfield-Mount Union’s Audrie Gipple, among others.
Also on the ‘away’ team’s sideline was Highland head coach Shannon Hills-Copeland, who served as one of two coaches for that squad.
Holy Trinity Catholic’s Melissa Freesmeier was the other coach for the ‘away’ squad. The ‘home’ squad was led by coaches Erin Steffener of Mediapolis and Kenna Greiner of Wapello.
At the event, the ‘home’ squad won in four sets. The ‘away’ team dominated the opener, but the ‘home’ team rattled off three-straight sets to close it out.
The 2023 high school volleyball season is now officially over. The state tournaments all wrapped up last Thursday, two days before the All-Star Classic.
