It was a busy day in Southeast Iowa on Tuesday night with over 20 games going on involving area teams. Listed below are recaps of area girls and boys basketball games played on Tuesday night.
Demons downed on road
Washington's girls lost at Cedar Rapids Washington 56-13 to fall to 1-1.
Halle Leyden scored four points and Josie Tanner made the only trey for Washington.
Van Buren girls roll, boys fall
The Van Buren girls jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. They led 18-7 after the first period, 26-15 at halftime and 43-21 after three. West Burlington scored in single digitis in each of the first three quarters before both teams went off for a combined 42 points in the fourth.
Taryn Scheuermann had another huge night, leading the team with 25 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots. Isabel Manning scored 14 points.
Grace Davidson had eight points and led the team with five steals. Madison Bartholomew had seven points and eight assists. Chloe Davidson scored three points. Selena Sayre, Zoe Best and Lexi Jirak each had two.
The Van Buren boys didn't have the best day offensively, but they di dhave the top scorer in the game. Tony Davidson put up 17 for the Warriors in the loss.
New London splits with Central Lee
The New London boys won their season opener in style, cruising past Central Lee 65-36. Grant Swanson led all scorers with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Blaise Porter and Kade Benjamin scored 10 apiece and Devin Swanson had eight off the bench.
The New London girls fell 39-31. The Tigers led 13-10 after the first quarter and 24-19 at halftime. Central Lee oulasted the Tigers in the second half, though, winning the last two quarters 20-7.
The Tigers were led by Layney Loyd, who scored 14 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Kara Krieger and Marah Hartrick scored seven poitns apiece. Emma Nye had three points, and Addie Pry led the team with three assists.
WACO boys win, girls lose
The WACO boys started their season off right with a 15-point win in Wapello, toppling the Indians 53-38.
The Warriors were led by Nik Coble, who had 15 points, nine rebounds, seven steals and four blocks. Pietro Vannini had 14 points. Drew Kissell scored 11. Gabe Reichenbach scored eight and Braden Hammond had five.
The WACO girls fell 57-26. After trailing 36-10 at half, the Warriors played much better in the second half but the damage had been done.
Wildcats falter
Columbus lost a SEISC North Division girls game at Mediapolis 70-25 to drop its record to 0-2.
The boys lost their first game of the year as the Bulldogs won 67-28.
Falcons, Huskies split
Four Huskies found double figures in the scoring column for a 61-42 win over Louisa-Muscatine.
Zack Lasek and Mason McFarland each sank 14 points while Bill Laughlin hit for 12 and Cole Adamson scored 10.
Louisa-Muscatine (2-0) defeated Highland's girls (1-3, 0-2) 61-41 in this SEISC North game at Letts.
Alyssa Brase led Highland with 11 points and 12 rebounds and Abigail Stransky added eight points and five rebounds.
Stout hits for 36
JD Stout's 36 points led Keota's boys to a 83-50 win at English Valleys in its first game of the year. Luke Hammen added 12 points and five assists while Wyatt Sieren had six rebounds.
Keota's girls fell to 0-3 with a 61-7 loss.
Mid-Prairie splits RVC games
The Golden Hawk boys used Carter Harmsen's 16 bench points for a 64-55 win over West Liberty. Chris Miller and Aidan Rath hit for 10 points each. Brad Tornow had seven points and seven rebounds.
Mid-Prairie lost its second close game of the season, falling 63-61 to the Comets. Maddie Nonnenmann hit 9 of 15 shots on her way to 21 points and Myah Lugar made 3 of 6 treys for 13 points. Amara Jones had five assists.
Linder spurs Panthers win
Emilee Linder, who scored 11 points in the game, made a 3-point shot (her third of the second half) with seven seconds on the clock for the 42-40 Pekin victory over SEISC North Division rival Winfield-Mt. Union.
Erika Coleman had 11 rebounds while Pekin teammate Sophie Wittrock had two assists and three steals to go with her game-high 20 points, 17 in the second half. Pekin treailed 18-11 at halftime.
Farrah Nelson led W-MU with 15 points and Kyndal Townsley had 11.
Pekin's boys won 56-38.
Ravens grounded
Lone Tree defeated the visiting girls team from Hillcrest 62-31 in this SEISC North game while the Lone Tree boys scored a 70-64 win.
It was a marquee matchup for the No. 6 (2A) Van Buren County girls basketball team and they made the most of it with a 63-43 win over No. 13 (3A) West Burlington. The Warriors rolled the Falcons 63-43 in the girls game before dropping the boys game 65-38.
Cardinal swept at Notre Dame
The Cardinal basketball teams traveled to Burlington for a SEISC doubleheader against Notre Dame, but neither of them were able to bring back a win. The girls lost 70-20 in their game, and the boys fell 68-34.
The Cardinal girls' team trailed 15-5 after one quarter, 40-6 at halftime and 58-10 after three quarters.
'We have to learn how to not turn the ball over and shooting has to get a little better,” head girls coach Makenzie Ostrander said. 'And we have to learn to relax a little bit.”
The Comets, who are still without starters Lydia Moses and Maddie Cloke after losing them to injury at the New London game, struggled to score the ball against a tough Notre Dame defense.
Alexia McClure scored nine points to lead the team. Rachel Lewman had six. Kolbie Bass scored three, and Ava Ferrill scored two.
The Comet boys trailed 19-9 after one quarter, 44-26 after halftime and 68-35 after three quarters. Only one point was made in the fourth.
Cardinal was led by Ian Liles, who scored 11 points. Jentry Arbogast had 10. Griffin Greiner scored seven, and both Dawson Lewis and Drake Harl had three.
