Monday and Tuesday was a big two-day swing for the area’s small school baseball teams, as conference races begin to hit up in the middle of the season.
No. 1 (1A) Notre Dame 15, New London 0
The top-ranked team in Class 1A was too much for rival New London in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference home game. Cale Westercamp had the Tigers’ only hit.
Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus 7, Van Buren County 5 (Monday)
The Wolves pulled away in extra innings, taking down the Warriors in the ninth inning.
Lane Genkinger knocked in three runs for WMU/Columbus. Trevor Phillips and Riley Kaalberg each had two hits and an RBI, and Cael Phillips picked up the win on the mound.
VBC’s Isaiah Meek had a big night despite the loss, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs.
Van Buren County 16, Danville 6
One night after falling to the Wolves, VBC put up 12 runs in the first two innings against Danville, eventually winning in five frames.
Will Cocherell knocked in four runs to lead the Warriors. Meek knocked in two, and T.J. Jirak had two hits and an RBI.
Wapello 4, Hillcrest Academy 1 (Monday)
SEISC North-leading Hillcrest Academey fell in a crossover game, dropping one to a tough Mediapolis team.
Phoenix Anderson pitched well in the loss, giving up just four earned runs in a complete-game effort. Mason Helmuth was 1-for-3 with the team’s only RBI.
Pekin 5, Wapello 1
Second-place Pekin kept pace with the Ravens on Tuesday night by knocking off Wapello at home.
The Panthers struggled a bit to score runs on the Indians, but did plenty enough to move to 4-2 in the conference, one game behind the Ravens.
Highland 8, Danville 6 (Monday)
The Huskies outlasted the Bears in SEISC crossover play, thanks to five different Huskies knocking in runs. William Dunbar led the way, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Highland 20, Lone Tree 8
The Huskies trailed 7-2 after five innings, but then exploded for seven runs in the sixth and 11 in the seventh to put up a 20-spot.
Colten Sypherd went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, and Tristin Richardson knocked in one as the Huskies moved to 4-2 in the conference, tied for second.
Cardinal 7, Davis County 2
The Comets scored seven runs in the sixth to erase a late 2-0 deficit and pick up a win in Game 1 of a Southeast Conference doubleheader.
Brody Phillips went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in the win. Bode Farrell and Quin Snyder combined to hold the Mustangs to one earned run.
Cardinal 9, Davis County 5
The Comets got out to a better start in Game 2, scoring five runs over the first four innings and never trailing.
Drake Durflinger went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the win. Phillips was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Braden Bllard went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
On the mound, Cayden Courtney and Kazin Miller combined to hold the Mustangs to five runs (three earned).
Regina 13, Mid-Prairie 2 (Monday)
The Regals were too much for the Golden Hawks in Game 1 of a River Valley South clash.
Tatem Telfer went deep in the loss, going 1-for-2 with a solo home run.
Mid-Prairie 6, Regina 5 (Monday)
A night of frustration was wiped away with a five-run seventh inning, which helped the Golden Hawks storm back to tie the game after trailing 5-0 coming into the last inning.
Mid-Prairie forced extra innings and then walked off the Regals in the eighth.
Luke Traetow went 1-for-4 with two RBIs in the win. Brock Harland was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Telfer, Landry Gingerich, Kale Miller and Carson Pence all pitched, with Pence earning the win.
Lynnville-Sully 10, Keota 0 (Monday)
The Eagles had a rough night in a road game at Lynnville-Sully. The Hawks beat the Eagles in five innings.
