Area baseball: Wolves play at Field of Dreams
WMU boys take on Notre Dame at historic field

The biggest story from the week in baseball wasn’t what happened in the Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus-Notre Dame game, but where it happened.
The Wolves and Nikes played in a special high school game at the “Field of Dreams” in Dyersville. The Wolves lost, but were able to experience a once-in-a-lifetime event.
Notre Dame 12, Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus 0
In Dyersville, the Wolves took on a tough Notre Dame team that hasn’t lost a game all season. WMU did keep the game close, thanks in part to a nice start from senior Cael Phillips, who threw the first four innings.
Notre Dame scored eight runs off Phillips, but four of them were in the fourth inning. It was 3-0 afer three frames.
Also getting to pitch on the Field of Dreams mound were Gavin Prior and Parker Wilson.
Riley Kaalberg and Lane Genkinger both got hits in the loss. Notre Dame’s trio of pitchers held the Wolves to just two hits, both singles.
Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus 10, Louisa-Muscatine 0
The Wolves returned to the Southeast to beat up on Louisa-Muscatine in Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division play on Friday night.
Riley Kaalberg pitched a one-hit shut out for the Wolves, striking out seven batters. Taylson Kaalberg and Nicholas Sparrow each had two hits and an RBI.
Hillcrest Academy 8, Pekin 4 (9)
The Ravens scored four runs in the top of the ninth to win in extras after Pekin came allt he way back from three down to tie it in the seventh.
Hillcrest was led by Mason Helmuth, who knocked in two runs. Rowan Miller and Phoenix Anderson each had two hits.
Pekin 24, Lone Tree 4
The Panthers ran roughshod over the Lions in SEISC North battle, scoring a ridiculous 24 runs in three innings.
Cal Miller knocked in a team-high four RBis on the day. Sven Dahlstrom was 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Alijah Brock was Nolan Glick went 1-for-3 with three RBIs.
Grand View Christian 15, Highland 5
The Huskies couldn’t hold back the Grand View offense in a 10-run loss at the BGM tournament. Highland also fell 3-1 to the hosting Bears one day prior.
Keota 14, New London 10
The Eagles and Tigers went at it in a high-scoring affair that was busted open with an eight-run Eagle fifth.
Keota’s Cole Kindred was 1-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs. Blake Baker had three RBIs. Tanner Waterhouse and Chase Sieren each knocked in two.
New London’s Brendan Richey was 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs. Riley Raines also knocked in a pair.
New London 10, West Burlington 6
The Tigers bounced back on Friday to score 10 runs in West Burlington.
Memphis Watson had a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Menke-Bailey and Gage Burden each knocked in two.
Mediapolis 5, Van Buren County 4
The Warriors fell one run short after leading 4-2 in an SEISC crossover game on Thursday.
Aidan McEntee went 1-for-2 with an RBI to lead the way.
Mid-Prairie 8, West Branch 2
The GOlden Hawks made quick work of West Branch in a River Valley showdown, scoring four in the first inning and never looking back.
Bowen Burmeister knocked in three runs in the win. Brock Harland knocked in two.
Albia 3, Cardinal 1
One night after splitting games with Chariton, the Comets fell by two at Albia.
The team’s lone hit was by Brody Phillips, who went 1-for-3. Cayden Courtney gave up just three hits all night in a complete-game effort.
