Area big schools fall in football finale

While the area’s small school playoff teams were kicking off postseason play, the Union area’s big schools were finishing out the regular season.
Washington, Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant had all been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention before Friday night. All three teams fell in their season finales.
Fort Madison 21, Washington 7
The Demons looked to play spoiler against a Fort Madison team that needed a win to qualify for the Class 3A playoffs.
The Bloodhounds held a 14-7 halftime lead, and Washington’s offense could never respond. Fort Madison knocked the Demons off for the third time in a row, qualifying for the postseason in the process.
The Demons went 2-7 overall in the 2023 season.
Grinnell 49, Fairfield 0
One season after a heartbreaking seven-point loss to the Tigers, Fairfield ended their season with a much more decisive loss.
Grinnell scored two touchdowns in each of the first two quarters to take a 28-0 lead at halftime. Grinnell scored once in the third and two more times in the fourth.
Fairfield ends its season at 3-6.
No. 6 (3A) Davenport Assumption 56, Mt. Pleasant 0
The Panthers couldn’t keep up with the sixth-ranked team in Class 3A, as Davenport Assumption held its home field for a district video.
Assumption put up 36 points in the first quarter. The Knights led 43-0 at halftime and hit the 56-point mark in the third period.
