The Class 1A and 2A state qualifier bowling events took place on Monday and Tuesday and when the dust had settled, a quartet of Union area rollers did what they needed to do to get to the state tournament.
Two Mt. Pleasant bowlers and one each from Fairfield and Washington will be chasing state dreams at the championships next week.
On Monday, the area had three bowlers advance from the Class 2A meet in Pleasant Hill. Both Mt. Pleasant teams were present, as were the Fairfield girls.
On the girls’ side, Mt. Pleasant’s Eden Svoboda and Fairfield’s Karen Ehret showed out, both finishing in the Top-3. Svoboda rolled a 623 to make the state tournament comfortably with a second-place finish. Ehret was right behind her, bowling 594 for second place.
Both Svoboda and Ehret out-dueled bowlers from Southeast Conference champion Keokuk, which had dominated the conference meet a few days prior.
Mt. Pleasant’s Cole Wohlleber was one of eight individual qualifiers on the boys’ side. Wohlleber finished seventh with a total pinfall of 624 to punch his ticket.
On Tuesday, the Washington bowling teams were in Camanche, along with the Fairfield girls. Washington’s Ethan Zieglowsky had a great outing on the boys’ side, finishing in a tie for second with a score of 634. Only four individuals in Class 1A advance to the state meet.
The Fairfield boys team had an impressive outing, finishing second out of the five teams in attendance, but a stacked Camanche squad rolled to the tournament’s only state qualification. The Trojans’ leader on the day was Gannon Scott, who bowled 514.
The state tournaments will take place at Maple Lanes in Waterloo. Zieglowsky and the Class 1A boys will bowl on Tuesday, Feb. 22. The Class 2A qualifiers; Svoboda, Ehret and Wohlleber will all bowl on Wednesday, Feb. 23.
