Area boys basketball roundup: New London get first win
Results from the weekend of games for Union area boys basketball teams

A few Union area boys basketball teams secured major results Saturday. New London started the season 0-10, but picked up its first win of the season with a victory over WACO at home.
In an all-area nonconfernce battle, Keota handed Hillcrest Academy its first loss of the season, knocking off the final unbeaten area side and win its fourth straight game in the process. The Ravens do remain without a loss in Southeast Iowa Super Conference North play and defeated Highland on Friday.
Keota and Pekin both picked up two wins in two days. Mid-Prairie, Winfield Mt-Union and Columbus were also victorious in conference games Friday.
Here’s how area small school boys teams performed Friday and Saturday.
Jan. 9
Mid-Prairie 78, West Liberty 61
Bryce Henry exploded for 38 points and 10 rebounds in a comfortable victory for the Golden Hawks. Brooks Weber finished with 12 points, nine assists and five steals and Carson Humphrey and Kale Miller finished with 11 and 10 points apiece.
Winfield Mt-Union 54, Louisa-Muscatine 16
The Wolves held the Falcons to just four points in the second half as they cruised to victory. Isaac Egli led the way with 19 points. Cody Milks finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and four steals.
Hillcrest 72, Highland 34
Hillcrest improved to 9-0 in SEISC North play behind four double digit scorers. Kale Bailey scored 16 points and Gibson Scott had 15.
Columbus 69, Lone Tree 59
Ellis Hills-Carrier and Drake Marin combined for 50 points in a 10-point win for the Wildcats. Gabriel Zuniga chipped in 11.
Pekin 64, Wapello 56
Pekin’s first win of the weekend improved it to 6-3 in conference play. Alijah Brock had 17 points and 13 rebounds while Cole Millikin scored 16.
Keota 70, BGM 48
Chase Haifley scored 20 points, and the Eagles had four double-digit scorers in a comfortable win Friday. Jackson Vittetoe finished with 13 points. Porter Cave and Ayden Galindo each scored 12.
Clarke Community 63, Cardinal 61
The Comets scored 26 points in the fourth quarter to storm back form a 50-35 deficit and nearly steal the game away.
West Burlington 62, New London 39
The Tigers remain winless in SEISC South play after a defeat to the Falcons. London Franklin led New London with 14 points
Burlington Notre Dame 83, Van Buren County 35
The Nikes rolled to 11-0 with a comfortable win over the Warriors. Will Cocherell was the lone player in double figures for VBC with 15 points.
Jan. 10
Pekin 48, Sigourney 45
The Panthers outscored the Savages 16-12 in the fourth to come away with a narrow victory. Henry Adam led Pekin with 13 points and Nolan Glick scored 12. Millikin and Brock each finished with 10.
Keota 59, Hillcrest 44
Keota led by just five points after three quarters, but outscored Hillcrest 20-10 in the fourth to hand the Ravens their first loss of the campaign. Haifley led all scorers with 20 points for the Eagles. Cave had 15 points and Vittetoe had 14.
Rowan Miller finished with 18 points and five assists to lead Hillcrest. Bailey scored 11.
New London 71, WACO 62
London Franklin’s 23 points propelled New London to its first win of the season. Senior Brigham Porter scored 19 points for the Tigers and Israel Lemley had 14 points, four rebounds and five assists.
