The Van Buren boys? basketball team shot 70 percent from the floor Friday on its way to blasting Maharishi School 78-34 in Fairfield.
Behind Colin Weaver?s game-high 28 points and Elliott Remick?s 20 points, the Warriors built a 32-8 lead after the first quarter. Maharishi School failed to keep up with Van Buren?s speed or hot shooting and the deficit grew to 53-19 at halftime and 78-26 after three quarters.
Also for Van Buren, Zach Boyd had eight points and seven assists, Dalton Stine scored eight with five boards and Blake Scott grabbed five steals. Remick had a team-high eight assists. The Warriors hit six 3-pointers, including two each from Boyd and Remick.
Nine Pioneers scored, led by Toby James with a season-high eight points, Paul DeAngelis with six and Dillon Evertsen with five. Sophomore Suraj Rao finished the game with four points. DeAngelis also had seven rebounds ? three offensive ? and sophomore Avery Mullenneaux had one block.
Maharishi School (0-6, 0-6 SEISC south) will visit Danville Tuesday, and Van Buren had a quick turnaround with a game against Scotland County (Missouri) Saturday.
Van Buren 61, Scotland County 56
KEOSAUQUA ? The Van Buren boys capped a successful weekend with their second victory in under 24 hours, beating Scotland County (Missouri) 61-56 Friday in Keosauqua.
Trailing 49-44 after three periods, the Warriors took a 54-53 lead with four minutes to go and clung to a 57-56 advantage with one minute left in regulation. Zach Boyd stretched the lead out to three for Van Buren with a key steal and layup, and Dalton Stine followed with a layup to put the game out of reach.
Stine led Van Buren with 22 points and 11 boards, Colin Weaver had 13 points and six rebounds, and Boyd scored 10. Elliott Remick tallied nine points and six assists while Blake Scott added seven points, five assists and seven steals.
The Warriors (4-3, 3-3 SEISC south) are set to host conference opponent West Burlington Tuesday before heading into the holiday break.
West Burlington 48, Cardinal 35
WEST BURLINGTON ? In Southeast Iowa SuperConference action Friday, the Cardinal boys lost 48-35 to West Burlington.
The Comets led after one quarter, 14-13, before a zero-point second period put them in a 12-point hole at halftime.
Jonathan Pederson led Cardinal with 15 points followed by Drew Ostrander and Cody Carter with six points apiece. Dakota Showman and Neil Urtado dished out three assists each, and Jimmy Edwards recorded two steals.
The Comets (2-5, 2-4 SEISC south) have one final game before the break with a home contest vs. Harmony on Tuesday.
