Highland withstands WACO
It came down to the final minutes, but the Highland boys? basketball team was able to avoid an upset on Tuesday night in Wayland.
Behind junior guard Trent Lasek?s five 3-pointers and 26 points, the Huskies were able to hold off the Warriors, earning a 46-42 victory.
Lasek was the only player in double figures for Highland, as freshman Trey Lasek finished second on the team with six points, all coming from 3-point range.
The win marks the seventh-straight victory, and improves Highland to 8-1 on the season, with their one loss coming to conference foe Wapello.
WACO fell to 2-8 with the loss, which marked the fifth-straight loss on the season.
Junior guard Jackson Roth had a big game for the Warriors in the loss, notching 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Duncan Pickard had nine points for the Warriors.
Highland will take on Winfield-Mt. Union on Friday night in an important Southeast Iowa Super Conference clash, while WACO will take on Holy Trinity on Saturday evening.
Keota drops North Mahaska
The big season continued for the Keota boys? basketball team on Tuesday night, as they picked up a 65-53 victory over North Mahaska.
The win improves Keota to 8-2 on the season, and the Eagles have now won back-to-back games after suffering their first conference loss of the season to Lynnville-Sully.
Four players scored in double figures for the Eagles in the game, led by junior Avery Conrad?s 14 points. Conrad had a double-double in the contest, notching 11 rebounds along the way.
Jacob Wickenkamp and Zach Mousel each had 13 points in the game, while Isaiah Hahn picked up 10 points. Hunter Wilson narrowly missed out on the double-digit scoring by picking up nine points in the game.
Perhaps more impressive than the balanced scoring is the balanced sharing, as four Eagles finished the game with at least three assists, led by Wickenkamp and Paden Uphold, who each notched four in the game.
The Eagles will take on HLV on Friday night, as they look to continue their strong season.
IMS falls to Lone Tree
In a clash among two teams among the top of the SEISC North Division, IMS came out on the wrong end of the score sheet, as they fell 53-49.
IMS fell despite 26 points from senior Eli Gingerich, who also claimed five rebounds, two steals and three assists, while junior Drake Brezina notched 12 points in the game, to go with five rebounds.
Junior Nick Yutzy had seven points, seven assists and four rebounds in the contest.
The game was tied at 26 at halftime, and stayed tight as IMS took a 40-39 lead into the final quarter.
IMS was held to two field goals in the fourth quarter, and Lone Tree took advantage, scoring 14 fourth-quarter points to pick up the win.
IMS falls to 6-3 on the season, with its two conference losses coming against Lone Tree and Pekin.
They will look to rebound against Mediapolis at home on Friday night.
