BURLINGTON — Notre Dame High School hosted the 2022 Southeast Iowa Senior All-Star Game on Saturday night, as area basketball players showed their stuff in their last games in high school uniforms.
Per usual, the night featured a girls’ scrimmage, a boys’ scrimmage, 3-point contests and a dunk contest.
The girls’ game was up first. The ‘Silver Team’ featuring Union area players Ashyln McSorley of New London and Esther Hughes of Hillcrest Academy took a 30-24 lead at halftime and won the game 57-47.
Mt. Pleasant head coach Curt Watson was on the bench to lead the girls’ ‘Gold Team,’ which featured Mt. Pleasant’s Kenna Lamm and Jadan Brumbaugh, along with Colubus’ Libby White, and Jobey Malone of Winfield-Mount Union.
The girls’ 3-point contest was played at halftime, and Hillcrest’s Hughes took it down to earn the championship plaque.
Hughes scored eight points in the qualifying round, second-best out of five contestants. She beat Mediapolis’ Hallie Mohr, 10-7, in the finals.
Also joining in on the girls’ 3-point contest was Mt. Pleasant’s Lamm, who failed to make the finals.
In the boys’ game, it was all ‘Silver Team.’ The Silver squad, which featured Dewon Trent of Mt. Pleasant, Chandler Stull of Pekin, Zach Schmitz of WACO, Devin Swanson of New London and Owen Loeffler of Van Buren County, won 108-78.
Area players on the ‘Gold Team’ included Winfield-Mount Union’s Konner Wade and a duo from Highland in Trevor McFarland and Chase Schultz.
Schmitz of WACO competed in the dunk contest, which took place between the two games. He failed to make the finals. Winfield-Mount Union’s Wade did make the finals in the 3-point contest, qualifying second of 11 competitors before getting defeated 12-4 in the finals by West Burlington’s Austin Applegate.
Other area competitors to compete in the boys’ 3-point contest were Pekin’s Stull, Mt. Pleasant’s Trent, New London’s Swanson and Highland’s Schultz.
