Area cross-country: Hostetler, Glosser win

Southeast Iowa Union cross-country teams were off and running over the weekend. The slate was highlighted by another win for Danielle Hostetler, this time in Pella.
Mid-Prairie, Mt. Pleasant in Pella
The Mid-Prairie girls won the small school competition at the Pella Dutch Invite on Saturday. The Golden Hawks had five of the Top-6 runners in the small school class.
Hostetler finished the race in 19 minutes, 31.2 seconds to beat everyone racing, small school or big. Greta Sieren finished second among small school runners. Abby Fleming was fourth. Brooklyn Stutzman took fifth, and Phoebe Shetler was sixth.
Mt. Pleasant had five runners in attendance and two took Top-40. Nelle Peterson finished 35th, and Jayden Yoder was 37th. The Panthers finished seventh as a team.
Monroe James took 43rd in the big school race. Tatum Kane was 45th, and Hailey Parrot finished 47th.
On the boys’ side, Mt. Pleasant was seventh among big schools, thanks in part to a 12th-place finish by Ben Carthey who crossed the tape in 17:20.4. Jude Dykstra was 24th, in 18:48.7.
Locken Henderson finished 47th in the big school race. Coleman Mowery was 47th. Garrett Landau took 51st. Gavin Slagel was 52nd, and Moroni Sanchez finished 56th.
Mid-Prairie’s Gavin Day took eighth among all runners, finishing in 17:07.5. Emmett Swartzentruber finished the race in 16:53.3, for sixth place overall.
Jayse Yoder and Preston Yutzy both finished sub 18 minutes. Yoder was 21st overall, in 17:37.7, and Yutzy was 25th overall, in 17:48.2. Freshman Max Swartzentruber took 37th overall, in 18:35.9.
Pekin’s home meet in Ottumwa
The Pekin cross-country team hosted its annual home meet at Wildwood Park in Ottumwa, and Chloe Glosser kick-started the year with a dominant win.
Glosser crossed first, finishing the race in 18:55.59 to represent the Panthers. She was one of three Pekin Panthers in the Top-6, as Lauren Steigleder took fourth, in 21:19.60, and Audrey Fariss finished sixth, in 21:42.85.
Fairfield’s Carley Seeley wasn’t far behind, finishing third place, in 20:35.20. Seeley was one of three Trojans in the Top-25.
Malena Bloomquist finished 19th for the Trojans. Caroline Van Pelt was 26th.
Van Buren County’s Rylee Phillips took fifth place overall, crossing in 21:24.07. Kaylee Snowgren finished Top-15 as well for the Warriors, crossing in 11th.
Van Buren County’s Lincoln Bainbridge was the top area finisher on the boys’ side. He took fourth place, crossing in 16:51.85. Teammates Landry Loeffler and Gavin Noll took 13th and 15th respectively.
Pekin’s JaeDon Wolver finished 12th, crossing the line in 17:10.40. The Panthers had three in the Top-15, as Mason Dahlstrom took 12th, and Cole Millikin was 14th.
Fairfield’s top runner was Nate Konczal, who crossed the tape in 10th place, running in a time of 17:44.83. Gabe Tejada was 25th, and John Miller took 31st.
Cardinal’s Christian Vass was 21st on the day. Fellow Comet Kyran Speas finished 38th.
