WATERLOO — Sigourney-Keota’s Sophie Young and Mt. Pleasant’s Shyann Smith were able to show off their skills at Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo this week as part of the 2026 Iowa High School Girls State Bowling Tournament.
Neither Young or Smith were able to get Top-8 in the 32-team fields. Young finished tied for 14th in Class 1A on Monday, and Smith took 31st in Class 2A on Tuesday.
Young bowled a 225 in her first game, putting her right in the thick of things. The SK junior followed that with a 201 in her second game and a 152 in her third.
Young finished at 573, which was just 28 pins back from eighth-place Payton Raisbeck of Louisa-Muscatine.
One day later, Smith represented Mt. Pleasant at the 2A meet. Like Young, she bowled her best in Game 1, finishing at 190, before following that up with a 141 and a 168 to end at 499.
The Class 1A championship was won by sophomore Olivia Steines of Camanche, who won from the No. 5 seed. Another No. 5 seed, senior Emily Whitehead of Clinton, won in Class 2A.
