Area girls hoops: Columbus and WACO prevail
Wildcats, Warriors stay in the thick of SEISC North race

Over half the Southeast Iowa Super Conference girls basketball schedule is complete, and a couple of Union area teams are still very much in the race for a conference championship.
Tuesday night’s girls basketball slate saw both Columbus and WACO win in North Division games, keeping Columbus in first place with an 8-1 record. WACO and Lone Tree are now tied one game back, at 7-2.
Columbus 47, Louisa-Muscatine 19
The Wildcats bounced right back from their first conference loss over the weekend to trounce L&M at home.
Ariana Vergara finished the game with 18 points. Lily Coil had 14 points and eight rebounds.
Lone Tree 67, Highland 24
The Huskies had an off night when they traveled to red-hot Lone Tree for a big North Division showdown. The Lions got revenge for a season-opening loss.
Katie Herrig led Highland with seven points in the loss. Katelyn Thomann and Emersyn Schultz each scored five points.
WACO 51, Wapello 36
WACO had to come back from an early deficit, but the Warriors led 21-12 at halftime and 40-23 after three quarters of another North Division win.
Ella Huisenga had 13 points in the win. Brenna Graber added 11.
Danville 47, New London 17
New London couldn’t take out its neighborly rival Danville. The Tigers fell by 30 in SEISC South action.
Mylee Miller scored seven points and pulled down nine rebounds in the loss. Ruby Myers finished with four points.
Central Lee 54, Van Buren County 38
The Warriors couldn’t take down Central Lee, as the Hawks used a 30-11 first half to scoop up an SEISC South win.
Sophia Jirak knocked down four 3-pointers and led the Warriors with 16 points. Addison Brauns finished with 11 points.
HLV 46, Keota 31
The Eagles trailed by just two points, at 20-18, when the game hit halftime, but a three-point third quarter spelled doom for Keota.
Emily Conger finished with 13 points and six rebounds to lead Keota. Cameron Haifley scored nine points.
