Highland downs WACO
In a clash between area rivals, the Highland girls? basketball team used a quick start to secure a lead, and claim a victory on Tuesday night.
The Huskies scored 34 points in the first half, and held WACO to 13 points over that same span, as Highland picked up a 54-31 victory.
The win improves Highland to 9-1 (6-1 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference), while WACO falls to 5-6 on the season with a 3-5 record in conference action.
Senior Cheyann Adamson was a key cog for Highland in the game, posting a team-high 16 points and dishing out seven assists in the victory.
Junior Kelsey Hora had 15 points and eight steals in the contest, with Aly Stokes notching 11 points and seven rebounds.
Halle Kissell?s eight points in the game led WACO, while Kianna Miller notched six points, as seven different Warriors had at least two points in the contest.
After Highland pulled out to a 34-13 lead at the break, the Warriors held tight with the Huskies, only being outscored 20-18 the rest of the game, but it wasn?t enough as the Huskies claimed the victory.
Highland will travel to take on Winfield-Mt. Union on Friday night, while WACO will advance to take on Holy Trinity on Saturday afternoon.
Columbus falls short against Mepo
The Columbus girls? basketball team was locked in a defensive battle on Tuesday night against Mediapolis, but couldn?t hang onto a late lead and fell to the Bullettes 51-44.
Through the first two quarters of the game, Columbus trailed Mediapolis 13-10, and eventually took the lead, up 26-22 after the third quarter.
Mediapolis exploded for 29 points in the fourth quarter, and Columbus couldn?t recover, suffering the loss.
Shania Boyd made eight field goals in the game for the Wildcats to score a team-high 20 points, to go with her 10 rebounds and eight steals, while Bailey Stroud had 11 points.
Kortney Orr hit a pair of 3-pointers for Columbus for six points.
Columbus falls to 4-5 on the season (4-4 in conference play) while Mediapolis moved to 6-2 (6-1 in conference play).
The Wildcats will look to bounce back from their third-straight loss when they host Van Buren on Friday night.
IMS falls to Lone Tree
The Iowa Mennonite girls? basketball team failed to score double-digits in a quarter on Tuesday night and fell to the Lone Tree Lions 49-28.
The loss pushes IMS to 0-8 on the season.
Five girls accounted for all the scoring for IMS, led by freshman Suzanna Yoder?s eight points and eight rebounds.
Sophomore Rachel Miller knocked down two 3-pointers for seven points in the game, while senior Jess Bender notched seven points and three rebounds.
IMS will look to pick up its first win of the year when Mediapolis comes to Hillcrest Union on Friday night.
