Highland girls split weekend games
The Highland girls? basketball team used a 33-point surge in the second half to defeat conference foe Winfield-Mt. Union, 58-31, on Friday night.
Highland picked up a big scoring night from senior Cheyann Adamson who led the team with 22 points in the game. Not far behind her was junior Kelsey Hora who totaled 18 points, and freshman Alyson Stokes who finished with 13 points to go along with a team-high 15 rebounds.
Monday night was a different story for the girls, who dropped their second game of the year, falling to the Wilton Beavers, 56-42, in a non-conference contest.
Kelsey Hora and Cheyann Adamson led the Huskies with 18 and 16 points respectively. The weekend split moves Highland to 10-2 on the season, with their only other loss coming at the hands of the conference-leading Pekin Panthers.
The girls get a chance to rebound on Tuesday with a road game against conference opponent Louisa-Muscatine.
Wildcats fall in close contest
It was a tight one through four quarters for the Columbus girls, but it fell to non-conference opponent Van Buren on Friday night 49-40.
The loss moves the Wildcats to 4-6 on the season, and they have now dropped their last four games,
Senior Kortney Orr led her team with 13 points, including four 3-pointers, followed by junior Shania Boyd who notched 12 points in the contest.
The Wildcats look to end their skid on Tuesday, as they travel to Lone Tree to take on the Lady Lions in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference battle.
Golden Hawks defeat Knights
The Mid-Prairie girls opened the 2016 portion of their schedule on Friday night, picking up a big conference win against North Cedar 48-36.
After trailing in the first quarter, the Golden Hawks held North Cedar to only five points in the second, while scoring 12 of their own, on their way to take down the Knights.
Junior Ali Butters led the Golden Hawks with 15 points. She was trailed by sophomore Addison Rath who fell just short of a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds.
The win pushes Mid-Prairie to 6-3 on the season, and they will look to keep moving strong with another conference matchup at Tipton on Tuesday.
IMS dropped by Mediapolis
It was a tough shooting night for the IMS girls, who fell in a conference game against Mediapolis, 66-26. They trailed 24-9 after the first quarter and just couldn?t recover.
This loss moves IMS to 0-9 on the season. Suzanna Yoder led the team with eight points, followed by Rachel Miller who had eight points in the game.
Senior Jess Bender had seven points, 10 rebounds, and five assists in the contest.
The Mennonite girls look to pick up their first win of the season on the road tonight against Wapello.
